Golf 1.4 TSI or 2.0 GT TDI

I'm looking at buying a used golf mk 5 or 6, budget around £4k and am trying to decide between the 1.4 TSI 122 or a 2.0 GT TDI.
Main factors for me are good mpg (mixture of motorway and town driving) and fun to drive.
If I went for the 1.4 I'm considering getting it remapped.
I'd appreciate any advice or peoples experience of either of these cars.

If we are talking MK6, the 1.4TSI came in two variations. The 122 in the normal S, SE, Match etc. And the 160 in the GT. The 122 is a relatively reliable little engine, for good reviews all around, but make sure the timing chain has been maintained/ replaced as that’s a bit of a weak point but if the car has full Service history and not run low on oil it should be fine. On the other hand, the 160 in the GT is a completely different engine that’s an absolute nightmare. It’s Twin Charged Supercharged and Turbo, and is notoriously unreliable.
The 2.0TDI is a very reliable engine, unfortunately let down by the Dieselgate Scandal. Part of the Software update/Fix for the cars was to work the DPF a lot harder to comply with emissions regulations. My old 1.6TDI used to have to regenerate every 100 miles and suffered EGR and Injector failure. Fortunately covered under the two year warranty they gave after having the Update done (which would’ve now expired).
The 1.4TSI 122 in March trim would be my vote.

Yes, terrible engine. A variant of it was also used in the later Fabia vRS. A good friend of mine is a Skoda tech, and reckons his dealership alone was changing an engine a week under warranty at one point. There was no way to stop them burning a litre of oil every 500-600 miles other than to replace them with a new engine. He mentioned that some of their customer's cars were on their third engine by a year old.As others have said, thankfully it won't feature in the OP's choices.
If it is the standard 1.4 TSI then fine, but the twin charged caused lots of issues.
From memory I know some people went through 2 engines, and Skoda got into trouble when replacing these engines as they put the original engine number on the replacement engines...which naturally made the DVLA a bit unhappy.
