Looking to fit the manifolds at the weekend now they are all polished up. Do the ARP bolts need to be torqued? Or just sensibly tightened?

Any tips on positioning the gaskets whilst lining up manifold?

Any tips welcome. ....

ARPs are rolled threads, whilst normally considered to be better than cut threads in this instance they do have issues. Because they turn so freely they also loosen easily. Using Nordlock washers can help but you need to seriously roughen the bolt flange surfaces so that the Nordlocks can bite in. As for the gaskets, I like to apply a little exhaust seal paste but the fitting process take too long and the paste goes hard before the assembly is tight. Last time I did mine I chose to fit the manifolds with only the bottom bolts and no gaskets first. That gets the awkward alignment work out of the way. I then slotted the gasket bottom bolt holes and pasted the gasket surfaces so that they would slide in with the bottom bolts in place. Top bolts are relatively easy.

No torque settings, just feel them in small spanner tight. Be aware that it is an alloy thread socket so be careful not to strip the threads

Tighten the bolts as tight as you can bearing in mind you will be using a spanner for most of them.

Do your manifolds have the bar between the pairs of ports? If they do then cable tie the gaskets to those (making sure you have them the right way round) then cut the ties when all bolts are in. Don't tighten any bolt until all are started.

Great stuff - thanks Chaps.

I have both the ARP bolts and standard new bolts from RaceTech - if either are better than the other? I hear ARP make life easier - but I dont mind the faff of fitting so much if I get a better finish.

Yes Steve I do have the bar between the ports - great idea re. cable ties seems to make great sense!

I have both too, I use ARPs on the bottoms because they are easier to check tighten periodically. I have cut threads with standard hex heads on the top because they stay put

Somebody on here once mentioned centre punching the ARP nordlock heads to gain more grip on the washers. I'm fitting mine over the weekend and might look at this option.

Sounds like a plan.

With the metal gaskets- does the flat face go against the head or the manifold itself? Steve I think this what what you were referring to earlier?

When you say 'metal gasket' are you referring to these

If so then yes they appear to have a top and bottom face but they are only one style so fit top face to engine in one position and bottom face to engine in another. The same would apply if they were the pressed tin type but I don't think they do as good a job.

When I said make sure you fit them the right way round I meant you can fit them with the holes aligned but the port holes are not aligned. this misalignment is very easy to do when laying over the wing of the car and having dropped them on the floor several times. This is why I always lay the manifold on the floor/bench, face up, and fit them with cable ties.

I have done plenty and know it works.

Top man - cheers Steve!

Yes they are the ones I have. I just wasn’t sure which face went where as one side has a slightly more rounded edge to it- but makes sense now.

Will let you know how I get on!
