Hi every one

After some advice from the many rather than the few on an exclusive message board.

I am doing a lot of miles to work now each day and at weekends travelling around. I cant stand the inside of my megane much longer and need some advice.

I am after a car typically less than £12000 preferably less than 30k miles, diesel, auto (if possible) and most importantly an estate! i carry 2 push bikes and camping gear regularly so need the extra room. I enjoy the creature comforts of cruise (radar is possible), climate and thats about it.

I did want the passat but found it too expensive for what i want and the octavia VRS was good but again too expensive so found myself looking at the seat leon FR. These all share the same engine and hardware and I was just wondering how you guys found the reliability for these cars to be rubbish or as a daily run around and weekend tourer acceptable as i cant really afford it to go wrong and end up costing my an arm and a leg every 6 months but also cant afford to take loads of time off work either.

If you know of any reliable cars please feel free to forward them as im not massively set on the VAG range but so far they look to offer the best choice for budget. If you have any experience of the 2.0tdi engine in these either 150bhp, 184 bhp or preferably the remapped version as they make the car more enjoyable please share your experience.

Sound like you really need space.

Keep an open mind. Try an E class estate within your budget.

Don’t discount merc dealers - it’s all about the price to change or whatever you can discount.

Obviously I’m biased, but I’ve had B5.5 & B6 Passat estates, which were great. Now
I’ve an E320cdi - wish I’d bought one years ago.

Don’t get wound up about performance stats and mpg. Take one for a drive.

I weighed up 140tdis through to the 320cdis. The difference in fuel costs is small, but the difference in performance is unbelievable.

Be prepared to travel too. It’s worty it for the right car (but don’t tell the seller you travelled far to see it!)

That auto Mondeo indeed looks very smart.

My Volvos and E-Class were cursed with expensive annual servicing from the local main and indy dealers, for what that's worth.

thanks guys,

lots of different vehicles to consider. have you had any to consider with reliability too?

Ive been warned away from some mercs and pugs.

that mondeo i almost want to own just for nothing more than pure comical value of the mileage covered!

Everything I listed will be as reliable as any VAG etc in fact some actually share engines which I always find amusing as some people will swear by a certain makes reliability & then talk about another in a derogatory manner even though both have the same drivetrain.

Also the Peugeots benefit from being a conventional auto so much less likely to give issues that the DSG units can sometimes throw up.

I had a leon 184 FR TDI dsg for 2 years

It was great, no problems at all, fast, quite and comftable, averaged 56mpg, no issues with the box

The engine is a bit clunky on start stop and the gearbox a bit jerky between 1-2 but after that it’s seemless.

It was a really good car. Well recommended. Get one with led headlights and a panoramic roof and ACC
