My American niece is staying in the UK to help look after my aging mother. She has a US driving licence, so she can drive on that for up to a year.

I have added her as a named driver on a couple of the cars, but she's really having trouble with manual gearboxes and a third pedal, plus everything being on the "wrong" side. smile

I am thinking of buying her a car - she likes mum's Polo, and it would be perfect if it was an automatic - but it's a manual diesel.

I'm leaning toward petrol as she probably will do a lot of short distance driving.

Cost isn't the biggest consideration - I want her to have something reliable as I spend a lot of time out of the UK.

Any recommendations/things to avoid?

Suzuki Swift, Baleno or Splash, or Nissan Micra or Note are always my go to suggestion for these threads. Cheap, simple and reliable.

Pick up a BMW 316/320/325Ti with an auto gearbox for buttons, and they're great little cars which don't suffer from the rust the bigger 3 series did.
