Picked up a couple of used Jerry cans for use at the track, but they had previously been used for diesel.

I flushed one today a couple of times with some petrol, but is there still a risk of contamination? I’m thinking not, but I don’t know how much diesel is needed for problems. I would imagine that at worst the first 20l may have minute traces.

Thoughts?

I think you may just get away with it.
Always best to ask with difficult tasks like these though.

Minutes traces aren't going to do any damage when diluted by lots of petrol.

Do you seriously think that about 1 part per million of diesel, a combustible hydrocarbon, could possibly cause any problems with another very similar combustible hydrocarbon, petrol? Did you fall out of the common sense tree and miss every single branch on the way down?

As a sort of aside but on a similar topic. after watching a Youtube video of it being done without problems I'm now running my lawnmower on 75% petrol and 25% central heating oil which is basically kerosene (paraffin). With heating oil at 54p a litre and petrol at £1.30 plus it makes a small economy. The mower works away just fine. No difference in power, exhaust smoke or anything else. Supposedly up to 50% heating oil will work but I'm not that brave. You'd have to be nuts though to think the residue in a cleaned out can would affect anything.

I used to know a guy who ran is VW polo on paraffin. He reset his timing but apart from that he said it was fine.

Surely that's twice? Regardless, you have your answer, and some!
