We bought a new Golf Cabrio 3 years ago for the o/h. It’s been nothing but problems, a real warranty queen and nothing like we thought it should be. So after its last round of dealer visits to sort the issues, and given it’s now 3 years old, we went to the market to see what’s changed.

My current car is a Jag XFR-S, which has been generally epic, apart from a timing chain tensioner. Yeah, not good. I want to keep it, but at 20k miles a year currently, I’m going to kill it, but it’s been streets ahead of the Golf on reliability and a load less dealer visits.

I wanted a mileage reduction car for the Jag. Found it. A Mini Cooper S. Wow, very impressive. A very nice place to be. I should have picked it up today, but the dealer royally cocked up on the preparation, so I’m in a boggo Cooper for bit (keeping the Jag btw). But bloody hell! What a great place to sit and drive compared to the Golf. So much so, the o/h has sourced and booked a test drive in one tomorrow, to hopefully rid us of the crap that VW gave us.

It just woke us up to what a very boring car the Golf is, and what better (by a country mile) cars there are out there.

So, never again VW, it’s been an awful experience, both car and dealer support.

I wasn't going to reply after that horrific use of "gotten" - but here goes.

My memory may be off - but isn't the last Golf Cabrio based on a mk6, which is some 10 years old now (launched 2009)? So you're moaning that a cabrio, which even when launched was based on a 4 year old (mish-mash of A3, Eos and mk6 golf) chassis is out-dated? Yours is 3 years old, so even when your particular car was brand new, you chose to buy a model that was effectively a 7 year old design underneath. And now, 3 years later you are surprised that it feels older than a new Bini?

Meh. Enjoy the mini. It's not as nice as a new golfwink

PS Pope catholic. Bears st in woods. HTH.

Funnily enough, I was thinking someone may reply stating the cab is based on a mk6. While you’re right, given the amount of time our golf has spent in the dealer being fixed, we’ve had many new golfs as loaners. They were all crap. Rattles a plenty from 2k-10k on the clock.

Keep those rose tinted glasses on guys, you’ll need them.

He’s already found that out as his new car wasn’t ready when he went to collect it.

Messed up ‘preparation’ apparently.

I bought MrsMDMA a MK5 Golf back in 2005. Used every day since then. The only thing that has gone wrong is a window switch (fixed under warranty).
It has needed front discs and pads replacing and a new battery in 14 years. It has been faultless.

Forgot, also needed a rear brake caliper and the usual rear bulbs now and again. They seem to pop for fun early on but it hasn't needed one for a few years now.

My mk6 golf was A peach, genuinely regret trading it I for an F31 320d which is an overpriced heap of junk. The golf had its faults but it was quick, economical, comfortable and smooth and was a perfect commuter car.

I just watched Chris Harris car review recently, he quite likes the golf.

I bought a MK7 GTD, had a faulty wire on the charge cooler water pump and a blown bulb other than that the car is fantastic. Fast and frugal.

I like the boring image it gives to some whilst being far from it. Next car will be a golf too.

'Boring' is what most people want. Daughter ran a mk6 Golf for 7 years and I thought it was brilliant - it just did the job with nothing more than routine servicing. I drove it now and again and it didn't rattle - in fact it was a remarkably smooth and quiet ride, even compared to my Merc. Was gutted when it was written off by a van rear-ending it a few months ago.

Golf Cabrio has always struck me a weird car - if you're going to get a convertible, then get a proper one.

Agree on the dealers though - tried two, both useless. Luckily we have a highly regarded indie nearby, although of course anyone can work on a VW. If VW could sort out their dealers they'd probably wipe everyone else out.

.
Years back I had a Mk1 Cabrio (well, mk2 but it was basically a mk1 with some changed body parts) - fantastic car. Decently practical for all I needed it for and great to put the roof down in Summer. I even liked the 'picnic basket' roll bar.

Interesting - I always thought golfs were solid.

I had 4x A3’s which are basically a golf or so everyone says I had an 04, 57, 60 and a 13 plate.

They were all completely reliable.

My Mk6 Golf was bulletproof. It was a 2011 2.0 TDI 140 DSG and I sold it when it was 4-years old with over 100k miles on the clock. Swapped it for a Mk7 GTD which had a few niggling problems but was generally quite solid.

We had a 2016 MINI Cooper in the family recently which needed a large part of the braking system replacing at 13k miles recently, bit worrying on a car so new and low mileage. Definitely drives better than a Golf though I'll give it that!

Yep. Our mini needs breaks every 13k too - apparently that’s normal...!

Crikey, as someone completely neutral on the subject, many of you lads have real boners for anything VW and seem to take this guy's comments personally. I wasn't aware that people weren't allowed to verbalise their own personal experiences to potentially help others?

Yeah it may be a cab based on an older design, but it sounds like it was a friday afternoon car so spent more time in the dealer. I've not had great luck with VAGs either (my Leon Cupra 20VT was probably the most unreliable car i've owned, just in front of an e46 330i) and my current Leon Cupra 300 DSG isn't fairing much better. All the VAG love doesn't detract from the fact that they aren't infallible. Quite a shame to see people go full bore defensive when someone dares give simple commentary on their own experiences.

Forums aint what they used to be.

You wrote exactly my thoughts after I'd read through the thread! People incapable of reading and commenting on someones experience without complete bias and ridiculing the OP

I had a mark 1 Skoda Octavia vRS for nearly 100K miles from new.

It had a few niggles, but was generally a great car, I thought (My wife still reckons it was the best car I ever had), so I'd say I think VAG have made some good cars.

I traded it for a Mazda RX-8. Epic car to drive, jumping out of a McLaren and a Ferrari one day, it really didn't feel like night and day, every drive (even around to the shops) felt special, but I eventually needed something to carry lots of scuba gear, so I ended up leasing a Golf.

The Mazda did guzzle fuel and need an engine rebuild at 70K miles - Some would think that terrible, but I loved the damned thing!

For decades I've felt I'd just find a Golf worthy but a little, you know, dull. And you know what? I do, if I'm honest.

Yes, the Golf R Estate I have is really quick when you push it, it did 42 MPG to Gatwick on Monday and it'll swallow two full sets of scuba gear with ease, but it's still a bit dull, if I'm honest, and barely a day goes by when I didn't wish I still had my Mazda, even if only a little bit.

In many ways the Golf is the perfect car for me, quick, economical, comfy, decent music playing/radio capability and with all the space I need.

It's a great car by most standards, but I don't love it.

That said I had my Mazda for 9 years because 99% of cars I'd be prepared to buy are so dull as not even to be worth taking a look at.

Everyone looks for something different in a car. The Golf almost certainly does everything a lot of people want it to very well.
