Could anyone tell me what the standard distance is between the manifold and the chassis rail is please?

I have fitted the near side manifold and although this is not sitting on the rail itself - it’s looks rather close say about 5 or 6 mm.

This is the side I didn’t put a spacer on the engine mount and kicking myself now ...

Nearside on mine is almost touching near the front, I've tried a 3 mm drill bit in there and it's tight. Drivers side has a Lot more.

5-6mm is OK.

Thanks guys!

Seems crazy how close they are!

They look great Steve!

I’m guessing you made them yourself?

Yes I did. The main length along the rail is secured below with velcro. The tail secures around the wishbone with a cable tie.

And before you ask...No i'm not making them to sell. They took an age to make using my hand crank sewing machine so the cost would be way too high. I made those (along with a MAF cover) for my own car.

Interesting, I removed that spacer from the RHS engine mount and the manifold was just clearing the chassis but under acceleration it touched and produced a vibration! TVR fitted that spacer for a reason! I have confirmed it. That heat insulation looks nice but my worry is it will rub away over time? To be honest all TVRs are different and some may have more clearance than others. I recommend fitting the spacer - why wouldn't you?

Must confess that does look like a nice solution to protecting the chassis coating.

That looks really good Steve - may have to have a play at something similar!

lancelin - I am kicking myself a bit as would of liked the extra mm's. I essentially got the car in a bag of bits - and after reading up on the spacers at the time - general census was there was only one spacer on the offside mount (albeit a few mention none at all and some having both) so went with that...

Steve's idea looks great - so will look into something similar...

You can make the two holes in the spacer into slots, loosen the two lock nuts on the mount, jack the engine up and slide the spacer in.

Just a thought and that's what I did with a thinner spacer for the nearside to even up the clearances.

Hi Phazed,

I did think of that, but wasn’t sure if it would hold - but if your think that’s an option too - I’m sold!

Sounds like a good idea. I also managed to put the spacer back in by supporting the engine block with a jack and it is possible to remove the mount completely with just the front wheel off! Its a fiddle of a job but i managed it.

Here's some heat shields I made for myself recently, as a comparison. smile

A job for Saturday me thinks!

Looks good Fox - I do like these ideas on heat proofing!

The manifold on the o/s on mine was very close, almost touching, and it was diagnosed as sagging engine mounts. Still original from 1996. I had new uprated ones (rubber rhat doesn't melt with the heat!) fitted in November and there's a good 15mm gap both sides. I didn't do as neat a job as above but pieces of aluminium heat wrap held on with stainless steel cable ties have been added. 99p for a pack of ties from China on flea bay.

It easily holds if you can’t jack it up easily enough to remove the amount to get the spacer in properly.
