Hi all,
I bought a 2015 (facelift) bmw 125d auto a few weeks ago. This weekend I drove from Glasgow to Leeds and back again. Cruise was set at 70mph in eco pro mode the whole way with no traffic and the trip said my average was 44.1mpg.
My previous car was a 2007 Z4 2.5si, I would do the same trip in that, cruise set at 70mph and I would average 36-38mpg.
Before that I had a 2013 Audi TT tdi, with that car I would comfortably achieve 60mpg+
Do you think there is an issue with the 125d, especially with the 8 speed auto box I would expect to see at least 50mpg, topped with its only 7-8 mpg better off than a 2.5 litre petrol engine.
Or was the TT just exceptional on fuel?
I understand the 125d is heavier than my previous cars. All the tyres have the correct pressure and none of brakes were sticking (that was my initial thought).
Thanks

That sounds low, I do a regular trip which I use our 2 cars for, not as far as yours but all motorway pretty much 70 miles, I always use this as a test MPG as its normally a weekend so traffic is lighter and I've got the kids with me so tend to drive much more steadily and stick to 70mph on the motorway:
BMW 330e without charging 45mpg give or take 1mpg
BMW 330e when I've charged it 65mpg give or take 1mpg
Peugeot 5008 SUV with the slowest 1.6 diesel in the world 54mpg give or take.
My last Audi A5 TDi ultra (136bhp version) used to get 65mpg+ doing this route, maybe VAG diesels hit the sweet spot on motorways?

Eco pro above about 60mph is painful you end up using more fuel trying to fight the fact it wants to go as slow as possible. TBH I don’t know how you used it for anything more than 10 minutes without losing the will to live. I only use comfort mode and occasionally sport if I want to boot it.

Hi, yes it is awful, but on cruise control you dont notice it. I'll be going down again in 3 weeks so I'll try comfort and see if that makes any difference.strath44 said:
I second the above, I'm not impressed with eco-pro I would run with it off and without cruise and see what you get before getting worried about what mpg is being returned. Was your TT a manual box?
Yes the TT was a manual box, I do miss a manual car! I would just put that in to 6th gear and cruise on. I have noticed the 125d goes between 7th & 8th gear quite a bit depending on the gradient of the hill. Going up a moderate hill at 70mph the car returns around 30mpg... I have heard this before about 125ds...odd..... more info https://babybmw.net/viewtopic.php?t=80572
I had a 123d, which was the forerunner of the 125d. It mainly did mid to high 40's mpg on longer runs - very rarely just over 50mpg - measured by brimming the tank each time (I'm sad like that). My 330d is slightly more economical on long journeys despite the 2 extra cylinders. It think it had a lot to do with the lower gearing of the 123d. Great car to drive though compared to the 330d! Don't forget that things like a head wind, hills, cold temperature can affect the mpg.
i tried this yesterday and today driving to york and back, around 230 miles.
2018 F90 M5
on the way cruise control on at 80mph averaged 28
on the way home cruise on at 70mph averaged 34 which i thought was very impressive. could have squeezed 1/2 mpg more without using cruise control but couldn't be bothered.
as a side note I have found the latest BMW mpg/trip computers to be very very accurate

Some comments
Yes Eco-Pro is not useful to me. The car (F30 335d ZF8 in my case) is in Comfort mode by default, and you can pretty much equal this by driving steadily, and Sport can be accessed by knocking the lever to the left.
I too have found the trip computer mpg, distances, and speedo mph reading too be pretty accurate too.
I get 44-45 mpg usually. In winter, I have noticed a drop. Also, as I commented elsewhere, I got a lower mpg driving into a steady headwind for a considerable number of miles (against storm Gareth, driving westward on the A55).

I had a 123d for 6+ years and 81K miles, and the OBC showed 48.7 mpg average when I moved it on.
Before that I had a 320td E46 for 40+K miles and 3 years that showed 47.8 mpg.
So I wouldn't ever expect to manage 50mpg unless you plan to drive like Miss Daisy.
I've seen the light and run straight 6 petrols now - my 325i is showing 34.8 mpg and my Z4 Coupe is on 33.6 mpg. But they are so much better to drive!
At the end of the day it's only money, and you can't take it with you.

Hi, my average is 34mpg with a mix of motorway 60% and town driving 40%. I just thought I would get better than this. Before that I had a 320td E46 for 40+K miles and 3 years that showed 47.8 mpg.
