Mrs has got a VW UP and mentioned last week that her car was making a funny noise...after driving it yesterday it's making a whirring sound after breaking, and during breaking. It had new pads fitted by VW (a mistake we will never make again after having my pants pulled down on the price!) less than 12 months ago.

Could this issue be related to the fitting of those pads or could it be something else? It is due a service so wondered if it's something to do with general wear and tear?
Im debating whether or not to ring VW and see if they'll have a look but don't want to end up them having a look and then saying its something else and being hit with a bigger bill at the end than if i'd have gone to the local garage.

Any help would be appreciated as I'm concerned that the Mrs is still driving round in the vehicle to and from work!

Probably a stone caught in your BRAKES, it won't be anything to do with workmanship from 12 months ago...

With such a vague description of the symptom there is literally no way anybody on here could know.

'after braking, and during braking'- so at all times then?

Out of interest has anybody personally had this happen to them or known somebody to have this happen?

'Stone caught in brakes' comes up frequently on here but I really don't see how it could be a common occurrence.

What do you mean by after Braking? as noises during braking give some ideas but not that would then still be noisy 'after' braking?

I had it happen. Braking whilst reversing shifted it.

After initially setting off and driving there is no whirring sound. When you apply the brakes the whirring sound starts, after releasing the brakes the sound continues for roughly 5 seconds and then stops. This doesn't happen every time the brake is applied either...which is annoying.

I hope this is less vague!

Could be some debris caught up. Try some emergency stops starting at 30mph and building up to higher speeds.

Providing it's a safe road and you trust that the brakes won't fall apart at 70mph.

Sounds like a pad not releasing fully.

Either a sticking pad in the carrier, caliper sticking or brake hose collapsing and restricting the movement of fluid. No mention of whether brake performance has been affected.

Always difficult to diagnose a noise without heaing it, but it suggests it needs some attention, the sooner the better An independant will likely be cheaper than vw dealer, but the answer should be the same.

OK so you suspect it's brakes, shall we assume that the noise sounds as though it's coming from the area of the front brakes and not the back? assume drums on the back?

Any funny or unusual sensation through the pedal or does the pedal feel absolutely normal?

Can you describe the whirring noise in more detail? what does it sound like?

Does it make the same noise regardless of whether you're driving in a straight line or cornering?

Does it do it at all speeds or only low speed?

Does the noise sound different in different gears or at different speeds?

Would you say the frequency of the noise is proportional to the wheel speed?

My wife (with me in the car). Stone caught between carrier and disc, it happened after a particularly "exuberant" exit from a gravelly T-junction.

That was quite some time ago though and only ever had it happen once.
