I posted a while back about the R&D scheme where you can reclaim various percentages of costs that you attribute to research.
We used a company to do it and they linked with our accountant so it was relatively painless.
The claim is being submitted this week and I’ll update how it unfolds shortly.

Good luck............but beware.

We received back £22k two years ago, arranged via a third party company.

In December, we received notification that HMRC are now investigating our claim. This, it seems, is part of their 'approve now - check later' policy. There's a lot of grey areas in what is determined as R&D and many of the companies that organise these claims have been a little over-generous in their interpretations. A couple of other companies we work with that have gone through the same are also being investigated.

Our investigation is on-going and I did post similar to this in another forum which I'll update as and when.

In the meantime, unless your claim has already gone in, I would advise you take a very critical look at what's being claimed - maybe even get your accountant to take a look too. And also ask the company what support they offer if HMRC do indeed come knocking at your door.

Welcome to PM me if you need more info.

Sounds like the old business rates scam.

It's not a scam. The concept of reclaiming tax paid on R&D related expenditure is entirely viable and established by the government to incentivise innovation. The issue is that the rules and regulations weren't particularly robust or clear so the spirit of its intent is being challenged and capitalised on by third party suppliers and its this that's being looked into by HMRC. It's not about spurious claims, more about interpretation.

We used Leyton who whilst expensive are very good, our (new) accountants also do R&D and have sanity checked it. We have tempered our claim down rather than squeezing every last penny.
