Just found out that they have closed the road that I live on, presumably to patch it up as it's in a terrible state. There was no warning other than a few cones when I left for work this morning, no signage what so ever.

It's a no through road of about a mile serving a dozen houses. There's a farm track that I could have used if I'd taken the landcruiser but I took the boxster this morning.

Are they not supposed to give advance warning? It's hardly the end of the world but I'll have to walk 1/2 a mile with all my work clobber and leave the boxster on the main road...

Just move a few cones or get the workers to do it and you'll be sorted. Or if the road really is impassable park around the corner until they're done.

I suggest you email the local council and let them know of your immense displeasure.

The normally send out letters, but no doubt you regularly inspect the draft Temporary Traffic Regulation Orders published by the local highways authority so would have had ample opportunity to comment on the proposed closure and make appropriate arrangements.

That's what I was after, the name of what to search for... wouldn't have made any difference as they haven't bothered to get one...

As I said previously, hardly the end of the world, just a little annoying as I could have just taken a different car. The council's ineptitude and ridiculousness just wind me up a little. A couple of years ago I had to get planning permission to replace a dilapidated 2.4 x 1.6m shed that was invisible to all bar my neighbour on the local council. They refused to validate the initial planning ap as I hadn't included a floor plan for said shed. I faxed them over a floorplan to scale, and they refused to accept it as the fax had reduced it to 96% and so was no longer to scale. They then had 2 separate site visits, once because "it was a nice day and I like coming to the village".

I would have thought that they could have put up a sign to say that the road will be closed for 3 days in the middle of the week...

Boxster if firmly in the poverty pork bracket, just relevant as I can't take it down a farm track.

Awesome road prioritization by the council. They are currently doing similar up round by me, loads of side streets of low traffic, low density housing and cars, except the main road is an absolute state. Must be council elections coming up soon...

Will list everything planned for the next 6 months if you select the right options... from road resurfacing to temporary lights.

I found that one already, but there's nothing listed...

We had a similar thing, live in zone 3 London, permit parking (so very restricted number of spaces in our permit zone) - came home from work one evening with cones lining the whole street telling us that if our car is there the next morning it will be towed. There are about 40 cars on our cul-de-sac. There was no warning of the works, nothing on the council site, nothing on the roadworks site.

Next morning I was at home and the engineers turned up, summary was

- The council cannot give less than 24 hours notice unless its emergency work i.e. burst water main etc.
- The council are staffed by morons who don't understand that when they forgot to do the work on the road, forgot to log it, then panic, then call the engineers and ask them to do the work the next day as they have already sent council workers to the road and coned it off...that its very likely the engineers were not sitting idle waiting for that call and in fact needed at least a weeks notice because they have no resource
- That when you chat to the engineers the next day they tell you that cars would never be towed in this manner and would simply work on parts of the road that are car less that they are not there to punish residents

Basically your council are also staffed by fkwits and they have fked up, unless there is an emergency. It was annoying though as many of us moved our cars to non-permit areas in the borough and had to walk the 20-30 minutes back (or bus) to the house the night the cones appeared having not been willing to take the risk.

You local newspaper, their websites and your local council's website post things like road closures under the Public Notices section (they do here anyway). That's probably all the advanced warning they are obliged to give, remember these are local politician wanabees so will not do anything that's really helpful.

Using up this year’s budget. Usually put some aside for winter contingencies, but now...

Yes ours was about this time last year. Council staffed by morons unfortunately does not help.

That's more like it, although if I could afford a 911 I'd buy something else

I don't work for a Council but what a load of whingers on here! My house is also accessible up a narrow steep track. It used to be very quiet but now is used a great deal as every house up the track has 3 cars whereas 20 years back most houses had 1 or none. I would love to be inconvenienced with no notice by the Council relaying the surface. It will never happen as it is not a major road. each year a fellow comes along and shovels a load of cold tarmac stuff in to all the potholes, smacks it down with the back of his spade then the first car to go over it spits it all out the hole again.

Be grateful your road is getting done, yeah some notice would be nice, but you'll benefit after the event.

Aye should be grateful for the stress it caused the elderly residents on our road, especially the lady in her late 60s who had to go park he car in a car park overnight for fear of having her car towed away the next morning. And the households who were not around that week whose cars were threatened by signs saying they would be towed away. Yes how lucky. How about just doing things by the book, the holes in our road had been there for a couple of years, then they turn up one afternoon putting out signs saying clear the road by the morning or we will tow you - putting those signs out without even having agreed with the engineers to actually do the bloody work, fking morons.

If they did their job properly (and our council is notoriously useless at all things road related from parking fines incorrectly administered to repairs) and were considerate of the stress that action would obviously place on people then it wouldnt be an issue.

Since when have council officers been political wanabees? They are apolitical like civil servants and serve the politicians in power but don't let facts jade your already jaded view ?

Oh and the reason you have expensive ads in papers etc is because of the lobbying by media types scared stless at another advertising stream of free tax payers money drying up.
