The brake warning light came on a couple of days ago. As you'd expect, the warning says to drive carefully and take the car to a BMW service centre immediately.

In reality, what sort of margins am I working to? i.e. how far can I realistically drive before I really need to replace the pads?

I've just taken a look and there seems to be plenty left in the pads. Obviously I don't expect to don't thousands of miles before replacing them and I don't want to damage the discs but I won't be able to get the car to the garage until next week. I'll probably do 250+ miles before I can get the car into have them replaced. I'm assuming this isn't an issue and BMW built a lot of leeway into these warnings?

It will be fine for a few hundred miles, no problem

What mileage are the pads on out of interest?

I would regard the minimum thickness of "meat" on a brake pad as 2mm. but BMWs seem to trigger the warning light at up to 5mm.
