964RS "Clubsport"
Discussion
Just a general question, what differentiates a 964RS Clubsport and a 'normal' 964RS.
All i know is that Porshce only made 150, and they seem to come with a roll-cage as standard.
Looking at the prices, they seem to be about 5-6 thousand pounds more than a vanilla RS.
Any further wieght reduction or engine modifications??

The Clubsport was just the 'trackday' version of the standard Sport.
It had a roll cage as standard and no carpets.
Apart from that it was pretty much identical. They tend to have internal battery isolation (all 964RSs had this, but mainly under the bonnet), plus fire extinguishers and harnesses too.
No extra mods to engine, suspension or brakes AFAIK. Drive a 'Sport' spec 964RS and you'll see that there wasn't a lot more to do. Maybe a more aggressive exhaus/intake system, fuel injectors and chip could get it up to the low 300s. Brakes and suspension are pretty much sorted as they are.

Does a PH'er own this car:
I have been watching a '964 RS Celebration' having conversion work done. Its a standard road car, with two recaro race seats. The engine is now a 3.6 turbo, (waiting for a Motec management system to be fitted). The aim is not to chase BHP, but to get 420 BHP.
Who is the owner?

Interestingly, the actual Cup cars *were* different from the 964RS Clubsport machines - mainly in the suspension area. IIRC the 964RS has what is called 'virtual Cup suspension'.
None of the Cup cars had 964RS chassis numbers AFAIK, so it is highly unlikely that a 964RS Clubsport could be an 'ex-Cup' car.

For the 964RS there were three specs:
Sport (most were these)
Clubsport
Touring (for gaylords only)
There wasn't a comfort spec, but believe me, the Touring wouldn't be that comfortable with the suspension how it is.
I totally agree the touring RS is somewhat pointless, but now they fetch even more cash than a normal RS and I have no idea why, but guess its cos they are so rare particully in RHD... Dom is bang on ref clubsport differences, with the factory mather cage it would be slighly stiffer than a regular RS and very slighly heavyer.
The proper production figs in Porsche own language are-
2,282 RS produced (although EVO mag say 2,264)
76 Touring
290 Racing
1916 basic
The only bit on RS's that really confuses me is the 300 bhp 3.8 RS. This is really called an RSR but this car always confuses me as the cup race cars were 3.6litre.
From the figures I belive lightweights (inc clubsports) = 1,992 cars
cup cars = 232 so my guest'imate is that the diff between the cup car figure & the total racing figure is the 3.8 RS number ie 58
Ive read that porsche produced 992 3.8 RS's but I cant belive it as ive never seen a genuine one and I dont know anyone in the UK who has seen more than 3.
Ref a turbo RS it did not exist as a production car, but there was in 1992 just before the into of the 3.6 turbo engine on the 964 a 381bhp Turbo S based on the 3.3 engine. This was RS style ie it was very stripped and low and was realy a track car. Only 80 were produced.
Im not normally so anal with numbers but im doing some Porsche buyers guides for Ted at the mo, so ive got magazines and files all over the place so I had the figures to hand.

I meant that some sites incorrectly use the GT3 comfort and clubsport names when referring to 964RS lightweight and touring cars, which doesn't help in the confusion stakes (mine in particular).
M003 is the Porsche cars designation for the "Clubsport" not much more I can add except I've seen them with 3.6 & 3.8 engines and they're noisy as hell to drive - amazing the difference no carpets or headlining makes!
I've also seen cup cars for sale too and Dom's right, they don't bear 964 RS chassis numbers.
NB ISTR there are one or two widebodied cars out here purporting to be 964 RS too
Cup cars had different suspension - harder, would you beleive, than the 964 RS
Oh and Dom, the RS definitely has ABS - Bosch 5 reprogrammed, I believe

Forgive me if I've missed this in any of the above but didn't the EVO article mention a 964 Carrera 4 'Lightweight,' specifically, as some sort of ultimate road-going 964, again, made in limited quantities?
I must say, as I've mentioned to the Great Domster, I do get bleedin' confused from time to time with all these Porker variants (indeed, if you're reading this Dom, where was that definitive site you mentioned which listed ALL official variants since 1483?)
I heard a 964 t'other morn (standard C2 I recall) and I must say, that oft cited 'chainsaw wail' was sublime, even without fruity exhaust treatment.
Joyous stuff, them all. Just remember: move over if the Baron gets you in his sights...

Aha, welcome Mark Piper! Yes, I read in a road test that it has ABS. Must be that clever Bosch system that lets them lock temporarily, as I definitely felt them lock a little when I had to use them in anger/emergency.
Most of the time you'll never get near ABS activation in the dry...

Hi Simon
The site is www.dennigcars.com
The Carrera 4 RS Lightweight was very rare, and only weighed 1100kgs. With the weight of the 4WD system that means you could probably get a C2RS down to 1050 or so... I reckon there's 60kgs to be saved on mine, straight away, keeping headlining and carpets.
Cheers
Dom
