Sad day. Fantastic in The Beat, still listen to their stuff to this day.

I grew up in the Kings Heath/Moseley areas of Birmingham and at aged 14 or so it was a fairly regular occurrence to see Toyah, and members of UB40 and The Beat just going about their business. Toyah’s parents lived about 5 minutes walk away from my my house and UB40 used to gather at a neighbour’s house for parties.

The Beat were the best of them.

Roger in childhood lived in Cattell Rd near St Andrews.
Mark Hollis,Keith Flint ,Scott Walker and now Roger in barely a few months.Shame that not more PHers not appreciative of Rankin Roger.
The Specials got the recognition but ,yes,The Beat were the best.

Sad news, loved that whole 2-Tone scene.

Just hope that if the BBC are going to do a tribute programme, they don't get Jonathan Ross to host it.

Two new albums in the last couple of years that really rolled back the clock with relevant lyrics, great beat and epic saxophone.

Fuzz Townsend from the sos car series was the drummer for the Beat!

The Beat were brilliant back in the day and recently they found rich form in writing and playing, 'Bounce' is awesome, 'public Confidential' is fantastic as well, I just received a signed copy from him the other week

The Beat were one of the first bands I grew to love as a kid and thankfully saw Ranking Roger's version a couple of times when I was old enough to go to gigs. He was a great front man.


The last time I saw them was less than 2 years ago (with Fuzz on drums).



A sad loss at such a young age.
