So a nice looking passat caught my when i was browsing cars the other day and it got me thinking it's time to trade in my 25mpg 06 hyundai coupe for something a bit more practical!
The issue is that the Passat has 200k miles on the clock.

And the curve ball - the garage it comes from provides a lifetime free labour warranty for everything (electronics, mechanical and services. MOT have a base cost but then all labour on repairs is again free). On top of this you can provide your own parts if you desire - so no hidden charges in high part costs.
I will be heading in to test drive it this weekend so i don't currently know how it runs (I would obviously steer clear if there are any obvious signs it's gonna blow up in my face)
Side note the same place is also offering £1250 for my hyundai coupe with 105k miles (only paid £1500 for it 2 years ago at 92k miles so i think this is a generous offer)
So my questions:
Is this past the point that even a decently run diesel should be considered?
what are Passats from this generation like in terms of reliability at high mileage?
key things to look for on a high mileage car/ tell tale signs?

Carefully read the small print of that warranty also
I don't know how that price compares to lower mileage examples, but if it's cheap and the car's in good nick, I don't see why not. The only thing that puts me off high mileage diesels is the cost of expensive components like DMFs, Turbos, Injectors etc., but if they're all definitely covered, why not?
Plus one on checking the MOT history too, I'd also want a HPI check

If something is too good be true, then it's too good to be true 
Free warranty for everything plus free services and base cost for mot? Where can i get this?
It's free warranty for labour, still need to pay for the parts.

I spoke to the dealer when asking about when I could go test drive it. He said it was used as a taxi... Which isn't great news but at least he is honest.

Sounds like CFCARS in Derby. Come across them a few times, they have good reviews and offer the labour warranty on everything they sell. Work being carried out by anyone else will invalidate it. Doesn't sound like it covers diagnosis of issues either, but they'll only charge £25 an hour for things like that (if I'm reading it right).
I reckon OP should buy it and report back when it breaks.

Why not? Yeah maybe a little tired possibly, but it would of been serviced alot - and dont taxis have more than one MOT, or at least a more thorough one compared to general public?It would of been kept on the road as much as I can I suspect, so mechanically maybe be pretty sound (any proof of of big bills DMF/Turbo etc) replaced...
I had a Scirocco with CR170 engine.
I made it produce 400hp however when I took it apart the pistons, cams and bores were mint. ( i forgot to say this was with over 190k on the clock).
I have no problems doing big miles in any car as long as condition is good.
Suspension bushes etc will likely be worn but aside from that the mechanical elements would be fine.

The warranty intrigues me but other than that as long as the cars sound a solid purchase and easily good for another 200k miles
Expect bills on any diesel out of warranty buy a newer higher mileage for less than an older lower mileage and keep some cash by for repairs.
If you don't mind higher mileage shop around
We tent to deflect our ex taxis at 6/7 yr old with around 300-400k on them everything gets what it needs using genuine parts no corners cut. Not all taxi operators are the same though and there will be some utter dogs out there with bodger accident damage and botched repairs

Glasgow Rob - does the age and no. Of miles match up with what you would expect from a vehicle used as a taxi?
Honestly the same dealer has just got a 2007 golf in with 140,000 miles that I'm gonna test drive too when I go visit Sunday. Same price range. I don't need the space of an estate really... And the rated mpg is almost as good (when driven sensibly I'm sure). Goes against the newer car with higher mileage Vs older car with lower mileage general rule though

Well I went and test drove it...
It drives lovely. No rattles etc. I couldn't see any black smoke coming out of the exhaust when the girlfriend started it up for me. Gear changes felt smooth and solid.
The most complete service history I've ever seen. Log book club roughly every 10,000 miles. It had the dual mass flywheel and clutch replaced at 140,000. It nicely had already had another major sevice with cam belt etc. Changed at 200,000.
Downsides one of the alloys looks a bit naff and is flaking all over. The drivers side front seat is pretty worn from driver getting in/out and has been patched. And one of the vents in the back has broken, all the slats are at funny angles...

If that was my money I'd probably be buying it. May be slightly biased but I've had more than 10 Passats over the years and I find the higher mileage ones drive better, more run in and will have had things changed as you mentioned.
My latest dirty daily is a 2002 estate for the princely sum of zero from a mate who replaced h wife's car for a 2007 one. Cosmetically a bit ratty but just clicked over 195k and drives al,oat like a new car.
