Something struck me whilst I was out walking today:
We've upheld the personal liberty and diminished the responsibility of the child for a generation now.
What the people telling kids they could do whatever they wanted to do, and get away with whatever they could just didn't realise is that no-one is a child forever.
I said a 'generation ago'. Significantly, because now the first generation of riot-running kids now have children.
So we have children bringing up children.
And they produce monstrosities like this like a production line.
I feel physically sick. Words can't describe how incandescent with rage I am when I read about yet another serious, yet motiveless crime.
We need to put way more police on the street and stop giving a shred of a shite about these peoples rights.

I personally believe that once a decade there should be a kull of no marks. the people that contribute something to other peoples lives should all form teams and club every burberry wearing, soap dodging chav like they were baby seals.
This may seem a bit extreme but after my nan was attacked in a similar fashion, it makes my blood boil at a personal level!!!!!!

You really do have to consider that perhaps, just perhaps we should reintroduce the Death Penalty.

I seem to recall that somebody once described a liberal who hadn't yet experienced the product of his policies.
But is it a product of Liberalism?
A constraint on personal freedom from a strict legal system is entirely compatable with Liberalism.
Some quotes below.
'In England — in many ways the birthplace of liberalism — the liberal tradition in politics has centred on religious toleration, government by consent, personal and, especially, economic freedom
Liberals accord liberty primacy as a political value. First, liberals have typically maintained that humans are naturally in ‘a State of perfect Freedom to order their Actions…as they think fit…without asking leave, or depending on the Will of any other Man’ (Locke, 1960 [1689]: 287). Mill too argued that ‘[T]he burden of proof is supposed to ith those who are against liberty; who contend for any restriction or prohibition…. The a priori assumption is in favour of freedom…’(Mill, 1991 [1859]: 472). This might be called the Fundamental Liberal Principle (Gaus, 1996: 162-166): freedom is normatively basic, and so the onus of justification is on those who would limit freedom. It follows from this that political authority and law must be justified, as they limit the liberty of citizens'

As Jag has said, where do liberals come into this?
Just a theory - nearly three decades of first Tory then Labour governments have been so preoccupied with 'the rights of the indidividual' that the responsibilities of the individual have gone out the window. Kids roam around like this because their parents don't give a
- "It's my right, innit?", "You can't tell me what to do" etc. etc. Personally, I get the feeling that government has picked up on the American trend for maniplulating the population, through media and spin - at the expense of actually engaging with people. All the policies, laws and campaigns in the world won't change how people behave if the they really don't give a stuff.
Now where do liberals come into that?
I see that the quotations used mostly date from the period when liberal/liberalism/liberty etc were begining to be formulated in the modern era (ie mill/locke etc).
I would argue that definitions etc do not remain static, but evolve through time. There is, we might say, a development along a direction of travel.
Today, "liberal" is often used to differentiate those who belive in the rights of the individual above the rights of society as a whole.
I agree that in its classic nineteenth century sense (and recognised by Gaus) a liberal would have recognised that a individual's freedom should be measured against the contraints society requries to function effectively, however the twentieth century and the twenty first century (so far) have seen a development in political theory beyond that set out 150 years ago.

I would certainly agree with you that the concept of Liberalism has been distorted in modern times, but we should not abandon the word and leave it to Big Government left wingers in the States and the 'Liberal' Democrats here in Britain.
Liberalism is the finest of all political philosophies, the antidote to totalitarianism (whether of the left or the right).
Moreover it is a philosophy that is very relevant to modern life; we are living in an age of Liberal economics, but not of social policies-there needs to be a continual debate within Liberalism of the limits of the state power over the individual, starting from first principles.
It is a terrible incident, firstly that three lads would think of doing this, secondly that no body came and drag the lads off.
But, sorry sparky this come close as well,
I hope that I am wrong when I say that next week something equally bad happening in Scotland, England or Northern Ireland.

We're back to these feral youths again - it happens all over the UK, not just in Wales.
These "little" (and I talk in terms of moral stature, not physical) bastards no longer have a real concept of right and wrong and where the boundaries are in our society. The disturbing idea is that they will obviously go on to breed and produce another generation that will probably be even worse - forced castration as a preventative measure? That would calm them down a tad...
Events like this do make me feel like we've got it all wrong - a "bad machine" that won't respect the requirements of a civilised society should not be allowed to be part of it.
Edited coz I pressed the wrong button - what a tit.

Precisely - we have generations that haven't 'grown up'. We have bolshy, rebellious kids being brought up by bolshy, rebellious kids. Given the rate at which scum breed at, it wouldn't surprise me if there are three generations in some cases.
