If your budget is around £10K why not look at the 23i's replacement, the turbo'd 2.0i?https://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201...
Not asthmatic by any means, and is turbo'd so has decent low down grunt compared to the entry level 6 cylinder.
It responds well to remapping too so that could be an option for more power if you thought you needed it. How about +100BHP?

They've dialled some personality in to the standard car too, so its quite a pleasant car to drive. We ran one for 3 years.
I've a variant of the same engine in my Cooper S and its great.
Based on what you've said you must be looking at the E89 model Z4.
The 23i and 30i use the same engines as the early E9* 3 Series 325i and 330i.
So having bought a 325i last year and found it a bit asthmatic, I picked up a 330i today to replace it as it just has so much more grunt.
So a 30i might be worth looking at if you like a straight 6 sound-track - plus there's no turbo to worry about!
It might be worth spending some time browsing on "z4forum" for more detailed information, or even joining! I'm sure there will be someone on there that can answer your questions! (Main reason I can't is that my Z4 is the earlier generation E86).
