Golf/Leon 184 alternatives/suggestions - Page 1 - Car Buying

Hello all,
Looking to replace my 10yr old Leon diesel cr 170.
Currently do about 16k/year 70% motorway. Need 4/5 seats, but nothing too big
Replacement needs to be under eighteen months old, and have similar performance to current car - obviously have thought of golf gtd or Leon fr diesel 184.
Anything I should be looking out for on those two models?
Did think of a Civic 1.5petrol - similar performance, but not sure about the economy.
Any other suggestions?

Golf GTD all the way - the interior is much nicer than the Leon.

Could look at a 120d as well perhaps?

I pick up a Civic sport plus 1.5 on Saturday. I’m done with my Audi A6 3.0tdi Quattro, too bloody thirsty. Will miss it.

Civic was the best option for me, as is a good size, Petrol, has all the gadgets and will average around mid 40’s

Thanks for the replies.

Liking the look of the Volvo, are the Peugeots reliable? I’ve always had the impression that reliability wasn’t that great.

Re the civic - went to see one - exterior’s a bit marmite - but I quite like it. Head room in the rear isn’t great - fancied a test drive to work out economy on my route - not sure I’d get it to mid 40s mpg - but they only do short accompanied test drives.

The Peugeots are as reliable as the VAG offering you're considering, they're a very good car & worth a test drive at the very least, the Volvo is decent but not as good a steer as the 308. Interiors are pretty close I'd say try both.

Trouble I found with the Peugeot’s is the driving position. I just couldn’t get to grips with their “i-cockpit” and dials above the steering wheel (which is smaller as a result). Definetly worth a having a look and sit in though; they’re making some handsome cars of late.

To be honest you can’t really go wrong with the GTD. Very popular as they’re so well rounded and have all the tech you need.

GTD 184
50 mpg easy
Go for the DSG

Cheap to maintain (just like a 2.0tdi SE/GT)
Extremely nippy
Good looks
Excellent standard options ie Adaptive Cruise

It’s a no brainier.

Leon isn’t that fancy
120d have crappy base options
A Class is fugly

Thanks for all the responses.
The GTD is certainly getting the “love”. I think they’re great cars, but have spent the last 20 years in a succession of diesel golfs and the Leon. Feel it might be time for a change.
Had a look at the Peugeot and Volvo today. Preferred the set up of the Volvo so going to have a test drive tomorrow.
Anything glaring that I should know about Volvos?
Assuming purchase from a main dealer, what margin for discount is generally achievable?

Just to update:
Enjoyed the drive in the V40. Happy with the deal offered, so placed order on a v40 D4, collect it next week.
