We are pPlanning a trip to Reims and are looking for recommendations for hotels in that area. We prefer small hotels in village/countryside locations.

Although we didn't stay in hotels (we camped) the small towns/villages of Laon and Fismay are wonderful, especially the former. There'll no doubt be PH who will know details of digs in these places.

I'd recommend champagne Tarlant in Oeuilly , approx 5 miles from Epernay - wonderful hospitality ...and a proper working champagne house.

I had a brilliant time there

Le Chateau d'Etonges. 51270 Etoges, par Montmort-Lucy. A 17th century Moated chateau 10 minutes from Epernay and quite simply beautiful.

L'Assiette Champenoise (The Plate of Good Food) is a 4 star luxury hotel that is in the suburbs of Reims and easily walkable to town centre (10 min?) or driveable. Petrol station right by the hotel - think it's a good one too. Safe parking with lots of beautiful cars - we were in an S2000 at the time - the Japanese doorman was salivating!

It's got a great restaurant which we didn't use cos it was pretty expensive and we preferred a good ol baguette and salty French butter for our meals from the supermarket up the road - which cost about 50p compared to £50+ pp. The week long trip including ferry and b&b at the hotel was £800 approx.

Chateau De Fere - lovely chateau in the grounds of another lovely ruined mediaeval chateau. Great restaurant and grounds and generally a very civilised air! - also quite near the old GP track which is always worth a visit/blast.

Can be found on www.slh.com - there are always some tasty motors lurking!

I can definitely second magpie's assiette champenoise - went there at the end of may.

fab food, excellent pool, v. nice cigar room....

plus a selection of fezzas, porkers and tivs to complete the look outside.

I'm off to Chateau De Fere next week - where's the GP circuit??? Would love to have a go.

Looking forward to seeing their wine collection as well, it's meant to be amazing

is excellent our group stopped there on the way back from Lemans, food is really pricey my bill cost more than the room dont bother go up the road to the steakhouse. We tried it, all french fancy stuff and tiny portions, people were coming to to eat in dinner jackets and evening dresses, and we were put in the corner with our week old T-shirts and jeans

The old GP circuit is off the N31 (which used to be the back straight!). If you are heading towards Reims, it is on the right just before Thillois. You used to be able to take the old Thillois corner directly off the N31 but they`ve been buggering about with the roads recently so I`m not sure if you still can...anyway you can`t miss the old pits/grandstands - eerily romantic and well worth a blast pass. You can still follow most of the rest of the circuit bar one roundabout and the furthermost corner (the old track peters out in the middle of a field!!)

Bit further South, but we stopped in the Hostellerie Des Clos in Chablis last Friday. Nice place, cheapish too, not a bad restaurant either (considering I hate French food).

Don`t think you need a jacket and tie for the restaurant - well I`ve never worn one there!

Cheers guys, will throw in a jacket just in case. And will definitely look out for the old circuit on the way there.
