Hi first topic created here so would appreciate some views?

Travelling on the local dual carriageway by pass this afternoon....was overtaking a line of 2 or 3 lorries and put my foot down to complete the manoeuvre ...prob ended up doing 80 plus to get past and realised a police car had come up behind me ..not sure how long he had sat behind me but could have been a while....pulled in after the lorries and reduced to 70 ..

Police car slotted in in front of me and was expecting the dreaded flash but it didnt come...he sat there for a while then eased away from me ...

He didn’t have lights or sirens on when he came up to me so probably wasn’t on a call but if he was going to do anything would he have pulled me over?..

Thanks

You're probably safe. A decent traffic cop would recognise that you were attempting to complete the maneuver as quickly as possible, hence a temporary breaking of the limit.

I imagine if ANPR turned anything up or you'd continued at high speed you'd have seen blue lights. Otherwise I can't imagine speeds of around 80 on a dual carriageway are really worth stopping anyone over, especially if they're not sustained.

I did get stopped once at night time on the M4, I'd been doing about the limit maybe a couple of mph over and there was someone in my blind spot in lane 2, matching my speed and not passing. Their headlights were dazzling in my door mirror and after about a mile of them not overtaking, I got frustrated and blipped my speed up to about 80 for long enough to put a couple of hundred metres or so between us and all of a sudden the blue lights came on and so I pulled over. The first question the officer asked was "why did you drive away from me?" which I explained, his second question was "did you not see me..." and as he said this he looked over and pointed to his van "...in my... UNMARKED?.... Police van"... as he realised his van wasn't recognisably anything other than a standard dark blue Transit, his demeanour softened and he calmed down a lot. Which is just as well because the next thing I would have said is "No, it's dark" which I doubt would have gone down too well. Anyway by this point he'd realised there was nothing dubious afoot, reminded me that the M4 is much more heavily policed for speed than the M5, wished me the best and then trundled off into the night. But with hindsight it was quite a funny interaction because the officer had clearly forgotten he was in 'stealth mode'.

Hi thanks for the views....i guess i could still get a dreaded NIP but hopefully as you say if he wanted me he would have done it there and then...it’s Beds so hopefully their traffic people think like you suggest!!!
