Storing a bike
Discussion
Hi PH,
I'm considering motorbiking as a hobby, and just looking at the logistics before I make my decision. When insuring a bike, does it need to be kept in a garage? (or in the house?!)
I have a driveway, but no garage. With gated entrance to the gated back garden/shed. Not sure if this is of any relevance if the bike can't be kept outside.
How commonly are they nicked from the residence if left outside?
Where do all you non-garage owners keep your bikes?
Thanks

I live in London and in a flat - so no garage or even a drive!
Mine sleeps on the street (bike bay), so insurance does cover you for that but prices are obviously higher.
2 bikes I've had have been OK on the street, but I do have a heavy Almax chain on it around a signpost, bike cover, and a smaller chain on the front wheel.
As you have a drive, I would put a couple of ground anchors and get proper chains on it. Bike covers are very cheap and very effective also.
Also depends how desirable your bike is to the thieves.. Mine is nothing fancy so they probably dont even bother with the chains.
If you get something very desirable, they will take it no matter how many chains and security you have on it.
What sort of bike are you after?

I'm in the same boat. Have a back garden with a gated/padlocked entrance but no garage.
I've kept my bike on solid ground with an Oxford cover, mammoth chain on the rear wheel and disc lock on the front. I plan on installing an anchor point to the brickwork of the house too (wall anchor rather than ground anchor).
So far it's been fine but when I insured it, there was no in-between for garage or driveway. It doesn't sit on the driveway for people to see but it's also not in a metal box. Initially I declared it as garaged and knew my insurance will be void should it be stolen but had to change it for fear of the worst.
What do people think of these semi-fixed covers? Think https://ldmotorcycles.co.uk/products/armadillo-mot... sort of thing.

I had a cover like that whilst my shed was being built it worked well for what it was. I did change the supplied nuts for some better nylock ones.
Down the side of house, ground anchor, disc lock, cover, padlocked solid gate so it can't be seen, insurer happy, not been nicked yet, touch wood.
Pita to get out though and mirrors invariably get knocked out of alignment.
I do get paranoid about scrotes seeing it when I get it out though, it might be insured but having a theft claim would probably make premiums painful.
