I had a delivery coming from Yodel today. When I checked the online tracking portal earlier today, it told me that my package had left the depot at 08:36 this morning, and about an hour ago, the driver was currently 5 stops away, delivering parcel 99 out of 168 for the day.

That seems like a seriously long day!!

Our delivery driver often arrives at 07:00 having driven 80+ miles from the depot.

But are their drops a bit farther apart than others? smile

Depends on how much distance they're covering

Local area parcel courier will be delivering 100+, depending on the size of his van.

Driver with a larger range will be sub 40.

Sometimes they can be a dozen drops away and only 2 streets away. Local deliveries have ramped right up. It's still a ballache for them when you're not in as most people aren't. People order and fail to think what happens when they are not in, but still expect their parcels to be delivered when they are in for 5 minutes.

Our local Yodel guy has said he's doing 120ish today, and that's a quiet day.

But we live in a dense suburbia where it's an easy job to potter around the various housing estates and drop off.

When we lived in Lincolnshire they'd be lucky to do 80 in a day.

Just to point they are not all close together. I followed a dpd driver down some very remote single track roads this afternoon for about 4 miles. As the roads are no through roads he will have to drive all the way back as well.

Friend of mine did a month for UPS, He said if you get trading estates it's dead simple but if you get country lanes with houses set back from the road with no numbers on the gates then it's a bloody nightmare. At least he got to wear a brown uniform for a few days.

I used to do about 50 a day in the late 1990s ,in a Transit Hi cube and a few collections at the end as well.

Took me all day to cover all of UB postcode ,Uxbridge area ,except UB7 and 8.

Judging by the amount of "parcels" in the Ford Fiesta our "Amazon" driver uses they are given a lot more than 50 in their van.

Our usual Amazon driver gives the local stuff (I'm guessing 2 mile radius from a couple of addresses she has asked me the quickest way to - due to a quirk on Google maps, if you use that as a aSat Nav it thinks our road is the other side of a waterway) to his wife I think from her explanation - I can't really understand her she has a very heavy accent, not even recognisable as Eastern European. But to be fair, she has taken the time to learn if we're not in, the 1st try next door neighbour, then unemployed lad opposite, then retied couple next to UL, but never ever Clive other side of UL as Clive answers the door the two days a month he isn't in Thialand, then our parcels sit in his house for a month.

Unlike Yodel, who when the blue bin is at the roadside for collection, and there is a big thing called a "bin lorry" in view on the CCTV as well, leave the parcel in the blue bin and put a note through your door saying so. Yep mate, there was empty Amazon parcel packing in there to RECYCLE!!

I'm rural and my DPD bloke often turns up at the door looking like his head is going to explode. One xmas I he offloaded the whole street on me and then roared away. There will be a lot of dead ends and lengthy lanes in the middle of nowhere for him.

Indeed.

My point... he starts at 05:00 and won't get home until 20:00+

(...at least he gets empty roads and fab scenery mind)

I was tracking a Yodel parcel as well the other week, said I was 80 of 87 or whatever, and he was on parcel 72.

Following the tracker he went nowhere near the house around parcel 80, and by parcel 81 was back at the depot. Bit miffed was I, sat at home!

Went to look by the front door and he had already been, and hidden the parcel at the front of the house.

So not entirely sure how their system works, but it certainly wasnt accurate!

All of their tracker systems are deliberately not truly live for security reasons.

As for OPs question depending on geography 100 to 140 drops a day any less and the route isn’t really profitable for the driver assuming their subbies of some sort (which most are even if in branded vans)

I worked for Business Express which eventually became Yodel. Local to the depot we would deliver about 250 parcels, I had to travel 50 miles to my first drop so my target was 85 (although it usually ranged 200-300 - over 85parcels I had a bonus per parcel biggrin )

Best paying job I’ve had, although it was hard work. Roughly £650 per week after tax due to the excess parcel bonus. Wouldn’t do it now, I think most end up under minimum wage.

And people wonder why their deliveries get left on the porch/in the wheelie bin/thrown over the fence. rolleyes
