during a recent visit to my local indie to get my hood fixed, the mechanic noticed a rattling sound from under the car which has been identified as a loose or broken baffle within the central muffler. Crispin at Oaktree informs me that this may break loose and cause more damage and should be replaced. The central muffler on the 968, he tells me, comes as a single unit, rear muffler + central muffler (part no 944.111.041.11) and costs (new) about..wait for it... £1150 + VAT + fitting. !!!!!
Anyone know where I can source one cheaper?

JP do a lot of the TVR systems at extremely reasonable prices i.e. the quote you have there would buy you two manifolds, down pipes and the rest of the system all in high grade stainless for most V8 Tivs. Worth an enquiry IMHO, check them out here www.jpexhausts.co.uk/index.html

Try a Porsche breaker, for that money you could replace the whole exhaust ! Crazy money.

I assume they're talking about a Porsche exhaust - get something aftermarket for a lot less money and quite possibly better.

Northway Porsche in Reading fitted a Dansk stainless system to my 3.2 which has had no detremental effect on performance and sounds a whole lot nicer - probably worth talking to them.

You can probably get it welded up too.

not really being mechanically minded, I'm not really sure what a central or a rear baffle is, or what part of the exhaust sysetm it pertains to. But there is much talk on this site and others of sports exhausts and stainless steel exhausst systems. If I were to buy an aftermarket sports exhaust then
1) would it include the bits Ive got to replace anyway ie central and rear muffler?
2) would it be cheaper or comparably priced?
3)apart from sounding better, are there any other advantages?
4) are there any disadvantages i.e would I lose the catalytic converter and does this matter re emissions etc?

the internet is a wonderful thing. I now know what a muffler is! thanks to our fellow enthusiasts on the PCGB 968 forum - have just chatted with Essentialstyling who can supply a 25yr guarantee'd stainless steel sports exhaust for £350 + VAT. I am told it wont be hugely louder (didnt want it to be) but will be throatier. For a saving of £800+ I can live with that
