Small Cheap Car £3000 - Ideal First Car.

I am looking for a first car for my brother, he has passed his driving test. He has around £3000 to spend on a car. Obviously, it needs to be cheap to tax, insure being 21 and good on fuel. Also, road tax needs to be reasonable. He does around 5-6k a year, but I am unsure if he would need a diesel, as their road tax is around £30.

I always suggest an Aygo here.

Stupidly cheap to run, totally reliable, don't rust, don't go wrong. Might be a bit small and not the fastest thing on two wheels, but you cannot do cheaper motoring IMHO:

A bit of haggling and he'll have £1,200 change which will cover fuel and servicing for at least two years.

If the above options are found to be a bit small:
Honda Civic. £3000 will buy a 2008/09 with high miles but the diesel is an option. Insurance might be a bit pricey.
Hyundai i30/Kia Cee'd.

Can't really go far wrong with MK7 1.2 Zetec Fiesta. Plenty out there so you can afford to reject any with accident damage, rust or dodgy service histories.

Ideally, it would have to be cheap to insure, so I think a Civic would be out of the question. Also, the road tax needs to quite keep. I know the small diesels are around £30. He doesn't want to be spending silly money on road tax.

I am not sure what they are like? In terms of reliability parts and servicing etc, I've had a Vauxhall Corsa and a Fiesta myself so I know they are not bad for parts and the servicing is cheap.

Id go fiesta. Had one for my first car, best car to drive in class and best seller for a reason. 1.25/1.4 petrol engines ones to go for

Tax on the Aygo is £20.00/year, insurance group about as low as it can possibly be.

Obviously I'm a fan but I've driven 70k miles in mine and the fact it's been so good is the reason why I'm really struggling to get rid of it in favour of another car. (Seriously. I've been close to a GT86 or a Cooper S on a few occasions but just can't say goodbye to the little Aygo. I'm such a wuss).

Wouldn't like to be in an accident in one of these doing 70mph. If I did get one I'd always make sure I had the mindset that I am riding a motorbike when driving it. Fiesta would be the smallest car I'd go for.

I've seen parents buying Aygo/Alto/Pixo/107/Up/Mii type cars for the children but I could not think of a worse car to put my child in!!! I'd rather drive the Aygo and let my kid drive my Accord, I've flown my mission so doesn't matter if I'm crushed in the 107!

My suggestions at this price are always either the Suzuki Swift or the Skoda Fabia. Had both in the family at length and both are excellent cars. The Skoda has a slightly dowdy image but a Monte Carlo might be in budget which looks a lot better.

Corsa D Limited Edition Facelift.

Cheap to run, cheap parts, easy to maintain, but the Limited Edition looked pretty sharp.
