Anyone got any experience/opinions/advice as per the title.

Love the look of these with good equipment, apparently brilliant seats and I'm assuming good solid build quality as per most Mercs of the time.

Are they remotely economical? If not, would a 320 be the better deal? I'm not really happy to go much below 40mpg real world for milage reasons.

Looking to spend 5k max.

The CLK220 is decent you'll see 40mpg on a run I would say with your budget in mind the 270 is the better engine as you'll see a real world low to mid 40's (mid 40's to low 50's with a map) the 220 will be mid 40's after a map.

The reason the 220 is worse is because it has to work harder than the other options but the difference is only about 4mpg so I'd go for the 320cdi.

As a side note if your doing a decent amount of miles then it's worth going for a Sport model as they come with the bonus of Orthopedic seats.

A CLK 320cdi must be quite a laugh. Great mpg and shove for the money.

I would t get too hung up about a few mpg here and there. If you test drive any you might be better trying the 220 1st. Going from a 320 to. 220 might spoil the 220 unfairly.
