Audi A5/golf R
Discussion
Hi guys, having a nightmare on choosing my next vehicle. I’m coming from the dark side (bmw) lol been a die hard bmw fan most my life just fancy a change now. My budgets at 20k (minus selling/part ex of current car- e93 325i m sport)
I posted on here a while back about the golf r and the Audi s5, but I’m considering just a normal sline or hopefully a black edition a5. Coming from bmw I’m slightly confused as to why Audi have so many trim levels and engine levels. Why is there so many diff petrol and Diesel engines with essentially the same power? Makes no sense lol anyhow, I’m particularly interested in some info about the 2.0t 225hp version and the 3.0tdi Quattro 248hp version (thinks it’s 248) there also is a 204hp 3.0tdi I’m assuming this is just a detuned Version? Just wanted to know what is the best model and engine to go for? Is Quattro a big yes? Are the non Quattro cars very nose heavy? As I’m used to having the rear end slide me through bends in bmw. Any common probs? Things to look out for, I’d probably go down the approved used vehicle path, is Audi warranty any good? Any other info?
I’m also equally interested in a golf r, but I feel I may be abit too grown up for one, obviously it’s a great little car, but the a5 just seems abit more refined and grown up and I guess it ticks more boxes than a R. Having a nightmare at the minute, can’t decide what I want.
Was looking at sort of 13 plate onwards...
Cheers

Probably for the same reasons BMW offer a variety of engines
Go quattro in an A5, yes. The front wheel drive cars can suffer torque steer and wheelspin with a higher torque engine. Sounds like you want a bit of performance so I wouldn't bother with these.
In an A5 I'd go 3.0 TDI over 2.0TFSI as the petrol offers no performance advantage over the diesel and no economy advantage over the S5.
Both of these cars have (generally reliable) S-Tronic (double clutch) gearboxes that require 40,000 mile oil changes. Both use chains rather than belts. Both come with stingy standard specification so make sure equipment you want/require is present.
Short answer - get the S5 if budget allows.

Of those 2 i'd opt for the Golf R without hesitation. I'd also choose the Estate as offers some additional practicality, whilst also being more discreet than the hatch's. I know it's down to personal taste, but i find the the entire A5 range bland & without purpose, whilst not being particularly attractive.
I've had considerably more premium cars over the years, but have truly fallen for my 7.5R Estate in a way that's astounded me. Never have i experienced a car that's so good at everything whilst still being hugely rewarding to drive.
I'm very close to an age starting with a 5 & had the same concerns regarding image etc. but it's my money & i'll spend it on what i want, so have very little regard for 'other's' opinions on what i should or shouldn't buy/drive.

Easy for me, I hate the Audi A5, for pretty much the reasons w8pmc outilnes
My Golf R Estate will do 40MPG+ on a run (or 20ish when caned!
)
Try the Golf R, as a day to day car it's very civilised (after about a week, you turn off the silly noise generator), but can be a total hooligan if the mood takes you and no-one wants to be 'too grown up' for that now and then
If you want a coupe style car from VAG, look at the Arteon.

Thanks for reply guys, I actually think the a5 in sline and black edition trim looks really smart, guess it’s abit of a marmite car though. What I forgot to mention is that 4 years back prior to buying my current car I put a deposit down on a earlier model a5 2.0t sline, believe it was a 59 plate. After putting deposit down I rang around the dealers that worked on and maintained the car during its lifetime, before the car was put up for sale (some months after) the car went into a garage with problems relating to spark plugs going black and sooty. I then raised this with the garage I was buying from and it was confirmed that the plugs were unchanged and still abit oily/sooty etc. Don’t know what the exact fault was but I was put off and decided to walk away. Apparently this was a current fault on the 2.0t variants of that era? Is this still the case will the later models? I’ve not actually ever owned a diesel before (obviously driven for short periods of time) so not so sure how I will get on with it as a daily. I was also considering a bmw 640d but again I’d like to try something different this time round. I would love a s5, I actually posted on here a few months about the s5 and golf r, and it seems the golf r won that one too lol also heard the s5 is very thirsty as a daily, I live in London so most my journeys are around town, on dual carriageways and the occasional motorway journey. What is the difference between multitronic and s Tronic? Would a 3.0tdi react well to remapping? Would the 2.0t react well to a map also? I’m actually early 30s and I feel like a R is beyond my age, so god knows how someone approaching the big half century feels lol ( only pulling your leg lol) another big factor for me is that I only typically hold on to a car for 2-4 years, so ideally I’d like some return back after that time, do you think the R will depreciate at a lower rate? Not to throw a spanner in the works but Is a s3 saloon beyond my budget of 20k? I believe that’s a 2.0t also as aposed to the 3.0t in the s5, sorry for waffling on.......
Cheers

Something like this with slightly less mileage, decent spec for the price?

Bloody hell mate, if you think you're ready for a diesel barge in your early 30s, there's no hope for you
If you were talking about a Civic Type R, I might agree a bit, but no Golf is exactly 'lairy' and the R probably less than most!
No idea what will happen, but prices for Golf Rs are pretty strong at the moment. A5 diesels are ten a penny...

PS The S3 saloon is just an R in frumpy frock at a higher price - I would be amazed if you could get a good one for 20K.

I have owned both a Golf R (got stolen within 8 months of ownership) then an A5 Coupe Black edition quattro. Both very different cars, however I am in my early forties and allot of friends thought my A5 was better suited to me... how rude of them!
The Golf R is a pretty amazing machine for the money, very fast, very competent and also fairly practical to use. I loved my A5, but I do have a soft spot for the coupe shape, hence buying an RS5, which is an evolution of it. My A5 diesel was 2015, with the s-tronic gearbox and it was faultless in the 3 years I owned it.

Think the S3 Saloon is a great option, think it looks far nicer than a Golf R and has bigger boot if that helps all be it saloon shaped! I have read a few reviews on them and the dimensions are very similar to a B5 S4 which puts it into perspective. Factor in a Stage 1 map will take you to about 375bhp, Quattro, Super Sports seats and I think you have a cracking car and the best news, £20k will get you one -

Thanks for input guys. I love the idea of the R and I definitely know sat inside giving it some beans it will put a big grin on my face, I don’t doubt that one bit. But I love the look of the a5 black edition and sline. I also have a soft spot for coupes and cabs, my last 3 cars have been bmw coupes/cabs. A hatch back just seems less of car to me if that makes sense? I was considering a 140i too but again the hatch back thing just puts me off slighty. If I’m honest i suppose I’m abit of abit secret snob too, the R is respected by people that know about cars and the younger generation, the a5 is just an more all rounder in my opinion ie sat on your drive, or if you go out to dinner or whatever in it just seems abit more grown up if that makes sense? Suppose I need a mix of both, the looks of something with presence( which the R by no means lacks- but the right presence) and the thrills of a fruity little pocket rocket. Which is where I thought s5 but after the reviews I got on here previously seems it won’t make such a good daily around town as too thirsty and more of a motorway cruiser? The s3 saloon for similar money makes sense? Cheers for the links to the cars mate, cracking finds- looking at the pictures they look horrible if I’m honest but in the flesh I do think they look the part, most deifinately. I do think a s3 saloon might hang on to its price better than an a5 though, the a5 would need to have all the toys and have most desirable engine which I make out as 3.0tdi and Quattro? Anything else like a manual 2.0tdi or 1.8tfsi is way too common and just an entry level. I need the looks of a5 with the engine and thrills of a golf R basically haha. I have never owned a diesel though, petrol head all my life so I don’t know how I’d get on with a diesel either, another point in the R’s favor! Hmmm
Get the S5 with the 3.0TFSI. Will give you what you want out of a Golf R, alongside the looks that you also want. You don't need a diesel for short drives around the dual carriageways of London, and on a run they are actually quite good on fuel. The Audi interior is undoubtedly nicer as well. Different AWD system means that they drive quite differently, the Golf has a Haldex system which is FWD until power is sent to the back when low grip is detected, and the Audi has a Torsen system which is permanent 40:60 split front and rear. The engine is whisper silent at a cruise on the motorway in D, but really launches from the get go.
2.0T is not worth the effort over a golf R, there is well known oil consumption issues with those engines. Hard to find in Quattro form as well.

hmmm this price just makes it all the more tempting, just checked and equivalent with vw approved used is up at 17.5k mark and without leather (leather and auto was a must) seems the dsgs are up for a fair bit more though, ive emailed the seller so see what happens? spec wise does this look okay? not too clued up on what the must haves are etc. dsg was a big big must but a manual is bearable...

Do you really find this an eyesore?Regards
Each to their own, but if I was in the market for a coupe, it still wouldn't be an A5.
A VW Golf R is a totally different car - You won't get 3 sets of dive gear and 3 divers in an A5

The question was which one - Of the two, I'd take the R again, because I still don't like the A5 even if you cherry pick flattering shots

I wouldn't say it was an 'eyesore', but 'bland and not particularly attractive', which is what he said? Yes.
