Hi everyone,

Planning my first solo mini 3 day tour for end of next week. Setting off from the West Midlands to Wales. Would appreciate any advice on routes/places to stay to get the most out of the 3 days from you guys who have touring experience. Cheers.

As far as paces to stay go, give my mates Alex & Marion a try in Darowen, Machynlleth.

He doesn't have a bike anymore but will be able to point you in the right direction.

Stop off at Llangollen and the horseshoe pass on your way, then on to Betws-y-coed.

The A483 between Newtown and Builth Wells is awesome but it’s hard to go wrong to be fair.

Yep... then do a right at Crossgates on to A470, then up to the A44 ... and A487 ...

Just be very aware of police presence ... North Wales / Cheshire police are very hard on bikers.

The B4574 from Devils bridge to Caban-coch Reservoir is the best road I have ever experienced on two wheels, but I was on a Hypermotard so it likely the best suited road and bike.

A4212 from Bala and then take the B4391 over the top to Ffestiniog. Just don't tell everyone.

If you're going that way then the A525 from the top of the horseshoe into Ruithin is also sensational.

I would also agree about going down to Betws-y-Coed, that section of the A5 is a great road.

From there I'd go to Capel Curig and take the A4086 as well.

To be fair in three days you can do the whole country. Try joining up the national parks and areas of ONB and you won't go far wrong. Try to get the Shropshire/ Hereford borders in on your way there

If you're heading from the Midlands, the B4391 is a great choice - Head towards Oswestry on the A5, then towards Knockin off the Nescliffe Bypass and then through Llangynog to Bala.

Went over that way over the weekend (not on a bike though!), although not as far as Ffestiniog.

Just keep an eye out for Sheep!

Trawsfynydd to bala is a fab ride. On a sunny day its like south island New Zealand. Hotel ar Portmeiron is decent and a great location.

Horseshoe pass from Llangollen, Ponderosa cafe, up to Ruthin, Llandudno.

Further south, Newtown to Aberystwyth is a good ride.

Many a fast day out on a S1000rr. I have a great photo lined up with 3 bikes from Cheshire police at a cafe. Bike still glowing hot wink.

You could also ride over the bridge at Barmouth. Something else for the ticklist.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't that bridge foot and rail traffic only ... ?

Ah ! That's not at Barmouth, that's the bridge opposite the George III at Dolegllau :-) But you're right, it's a fun bridge to go over.

(Penmaenpool Bridge to be precise)

The George III is a nice hotel, it's just been refurbished, opened about a week ago. Part of it is an old railway building.

Re the Barmouth rail/footbridge. Certainly a year or so back you could ride over on a bike. I've done it on two separate trips. Better going from Barmouth side as the entry is a little narrow. Worth a check if you do end up in Barmouth. You can return via the toll bridge in the pic above. smile
