We have an old Golf 4 1.6 Match as the dog runaround. It's done about 114k miles and has been pretty reliable.

Possible relevant history: When we first bought it, they seller told us that the EML comes on occasionally but doesn't affect performance. He was right on both counts. It gives a P0106 code when checked, which could relate to the EGR but there are also many internet tales of the brake light switch being involved. I haven't change that yet simply because I can't find a 4-pin switch for sale anywhere.

Fast forward to last weekend. MrsC was driving it at around 60mph when it suddenly lost all power. She limped to the side of the road, turned it off, started it again and it ran fine. The following day, I was following her when it did it again. Before she turned it off, I listened to it and on tickover the engine speed was hunting up & down. I suspected TPS at that stage.

I drove it home from where it did that, about 60 miles, and had no further trouble with it. When I was nearer to home I gave it some wellie to try and "break" it again but it all worked fine.

I got another code off it last night, P0170, which is a "fuel trim malfunction". So I still suspect TPS to some extent although could also be the MAF?

The other thing is, the throttle body doesn't appear to have a separate TPS on it. Are they integral on these?

All hints welcome. Given it's shed status and the price we paid for it (£500), whilst I'm happy to fix I certainly don't want to spend lots of money on it. It passed the MOT a month or so back, so as long as it runs for another few months without breaking down that's all i need from it!

The 1.6 16V engine doesn't have a MAF.

The symptoms and fault codes point to a faulty MAP sensor.

Throttle is DBW, so the TPS is an integral part and not serviceable.
