Hello i am having a bit of trouble atm in regards to the notorious diff whine and i am needing a replacement. i have a 2006 120d msport ratio 3.07 6 speed manual. the thing is im having trouble finding a suitable part to replace it online. Would a bmw differential from the newer bmws like the bmw 1 series and 3 series n47 bolt straight on to my car or are they not compatible?

Could you get your diff rebuilt? What's the cause of the whining?

Are you looking explicitly for a new one? If not I'd have a look around breakers; There's one down my road that seems to wheel in a new wrecked 120D every week.

They're all bought up by the same 17YO's that are writing them all off smile

The 1:3.07 diff was fitted to the automatic cars; the manuals should have a 1:2.56 differential. You're 100% sure yours is a 1:3.07?

Diffs for these (120d and 320d E90) are practically worthless because they rarely fail, unlike the small case early 118d units.

Here's one for 60 quid:

Another for £70:

Just ensure the noise isn't a rear wheel bearing.
