I'm looking at getting some of the M Performance modifications fitted to my 2017/17 M140i- namely the M Performance exhaust, differential and possibly side skirts. I spoke with my current insurer earlier (Hastings) whose immediate response to my testing the waters was "we won't cover modifications" (despite quoting me through CompareTheMarket when I listed them). Which is a pain, as I'd been looking to do the exhaust at the end of this month- maybe I'll see if I can speak to someone else there though.

Can anyone recommend a provider with a more relaxed attitude (I have to say I've not been especially impressed by Hastings recently, especially when trying to make fairly minor changes to my policy). Ideally I'd be looking for one that will let me make amendments with a minimum processing/handling fee for doing so as I don't intend on doing everything at once.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

You could try Aviva

https://www.aviva.co.uk/insurance/motor/car-insura...

There's no fees for changes to policy, however they were quite expensive when I got a quote from them last week.

Thanks, I'll look into it. I'm not averse to paying a bit more than my current policy costs (just shy of £500) if they're a decent provider...

-EDIT

A quick quote with diff + exhaust changes listed gives me a premium of nearly £1400 with an equivalent level of cover to my current policy, unfortunately.

Gulp! By the way, I ended up insuring through Hastings!

Modded 140i means you’re gonna be seen in the same crowd as all the turnips on YouTube driving like bellends in their modded cars.

I’d do a pence per mile compare of a modded 140i and a V8 M3.

I bet the M3 ends up working out not much more at all, if not better.

My Z4 has a non-standard exhaust and I've insured it through Chris Knott (who are the recommended broker on the z4forum).

But LV did quote on it last year. I believe Adrian Flux will do modified cars too.

Good luck. thumbup

Try Adrian Flux - I’m on a modified policy for my exige and works out pretty well

Louder exhaust also means you're likely to attract more attention from the BiB - the stealthy approach is much better.

On my current m135i with DMS remap and Eibach springs i used Adrian Flux for years - but every single year the price went up and up and...... .UP

In the end i switched to an admiral multi-car policy along with my Cayman GTS and saved quite a bit of money on both.

I have just ordered a new m140i, which arrives in a few weeks. I asked Admiral to quote with and without mods. The increase for all the following mods was a mere £3/month (yes I pay monthly):-

- Litchfield Map
- Limited Slip Diff
- Eibach springs + spacers
- Side skirts, front splitter + spoiler cap.

Kudos to Admiral for being so great with so many mods, what a great surprise that was!

REIS is my personal recommendation these days... on my modified jap import they came in £200 cheaper than every other broker... considerable saving when it's a £270 policy.

That last lot are absolute scammers, as are their parent company Grove and Dean.

Their cheap quotes are a mechanism to get you on the hook so they can find an excuse to pump up your premium over the phone during a 'validation call'.

Fair dos, good to know!

Personally I would go with REIS or Brentacre... Greenlight are also good but you do have to get past their fairly bad new business customer service agents, however they are very mod friendly and will mirror NCB on multiple cars etc.

Another one for Chris Knott. I have been using them ever since i had a Modified Mazda MPS, my 340i is stll insured with them and they are very competitive .

Near identical mods on my 435i through Admiral on a multi car policy.

Never had to claim and I’ve read they’re not the best when needed but then again I really don’t plan to and touch wood haven’t yet.
