Vehicles just appeared to be going too fast

Yes indeed, I suspect in this case about 40mph would be far too fast for the conditions. Never mind, eh, speed cameras set to trigger at 78 to the rescue! No need for qualified traffic police at all. I weep for the state of this country.

Didn't you know that if you use your red fog rear lights you're immune to accidents and can go at any speed you like?

No they all were doing 69 mph staring at their speedometers because as long as they are under the limit they are perfectly safe and dont need to take anything else into consideration.

You can bet that some people's logic might work like this:

"Ooh, thick fog! No chance of getting scammed here, time to put my foot down "

A University reconstructed the path of a number of vehicles using models in the famous Hungerford M4 pile up some years ago.

Its a stop frame animation that lasts under a minute.

I saw it when I did the RoSPA and it is nothing short of absolutely astonishing.

There were people undertaking the first wave emergency vehicles completely oblivious to what lay ahead.

There are just some people who shouldnt be behind the wheel of a car.

As a recovery man, this is the sort of thing we dream of! Providing no-one is hurt of course.

Better hope they can see through it then! - Streaky

PS - reminds me of that old joke: "A large hole has appeared in the road. A police spokesman said, 'We are looking in to it.'" How we laughed! - S

There is the problem of people panicking and suddenly slowing which doesn't help. The major part of the accident on the Kent/Surrey border where a few people burned to death was attributed to a muppet stopping on the main carriageway and getting out of his car because he couldn't see where he was going.

Seems to sum up the fact that "SPEED DOES KILL", no other explanation for it, if you cant see far enough ahead to bring your vehicle to a safe stop, your going too fast=speeding will kill.

Some years ago there was a mega pile up on the M4, and when they interviewed a motorist, he said it was the fault of the police, when the guy asked him to explain that, he said "Well there wasnt any signs telling us to slow down", so the guy said something like "Didnt you see the fog", "Yes", he said "but there wasnt any signs telling us to slow down"...........

How many times have we all slowed in fog to a reasonable speed only to have those cars fitted with hi tech "Radar" going zipping past us.....

A consignment of wigs was stolen from a factory near London. Police are combing the area.

In this case, 40mph would have been too fast. People on here are not denying the possibility that speed could be a contributing factor in accidents. People are angry that the current roads policing simply cannot do anything about people driving too fast (e.g. 40mph) in thick fog, or drink driving, or no insurance, or no MOT etc etc

Today a lorry full of fruit crashed into a lorry carrying sugar. Police are advising motorists to avoid the area as many cars are stuck in a jam.

As regards the law...possibly a bit severe, but driving w/o due care and attention would probably apply - arguably if you hit the back of someone driving in front of you and your car is mechanically sound, you've done something fundamentally wrong.

I would agree with Havoc here in that drivers who crash into other vehicles in front should be charged with driving w/o du care. And it should be given media coverage.
Any time someone is caught doing 100+ on the Mway it is on the news, even if nothing else happened. These people caused an accident, and another, and another and so on.

If they hit a stationary vehicle in a pile up they could have potentially hit a member of the emergency services. If i can lose my license for doing 110 on a clear Mway in perfect weather why should these people get away with an insurance claim and the idea stuck in their head that they were not at fault
