Hi all

The missus and I have decided to lose a bit of timber and slimming world is the way she has decided. Can anyone suggest any decent recipes? Millions exist online but very few are decent so I’m hoping some of you can point me in the right direction!

Cheers

JK

Thanks for the suggestion. I have tried one of their recipes which suggests cooking small pasta for 20 minutes. Obviously it wasn’t very good!

I watched my daughter lose a massive amount of weight over 18 months and she based her recipes on the Slimming World recipes which I thought they provided with the course. She made a big effort to understand their rules about what's OK and what's not. The food is tasty enough but of course without much fat or oil wasn't as rich as the food I cook.

The cream substitute is amazing though. I'm happy to eat her slimming world meals they taste just fine.

I can say with confidence - follow their rules and it delivers. I was really very impressed. We're not talking a few pounds here more like a few stone over 18 months. She's now the shape she was in her teens after two children and some careless eating (and drinking).

Go for it - it's changed her life.

The pinch of nom website is very good. Although it isn’t affiliated with slimming world as far as I know just “pinched” recipes.

My mum runs a SW group, lots of people lose lots of weight if you stick to the rules.

Try the beef stroganoff off the website, it is decent.

Any questions let me know and I can ask the old dear for you. Thanks.

I'm back on SW after a period of illness and steroid medication saw me put back the weight I lost last year. frown

Concerted effort with healthy foods, smaller portions (my biggest issue I think) and exercising as much as I can, for someone with limited mobility and I have lost 6lbs in a week.

In truth, being the weight I am makes me incredibly unhappy so I am hoping I can make the changes needed.

Best of luck OP. smile

SW is great IMO. I lost nearly two stone. After paying for a year, I then decided to buy some recipe books and some scales. I've slipped a bit and need to return and do another couple of months to lose some more.

I find the recipes pretty good

Hello.

Exercise at least 3 times a week for an hour each time.
Quit alcohol.
Limit calories to around 2000 per day.
Say bye bye to all that excess weight. smile

I lost 3 stone last year on SW and my wife did the same and became a consultant - she left her FT job to go PT last summer and is leaving her PT job on Tuesday to become a consultant full time

Some of the cook books are excellent. We use the Fakeaways and the Take 5 books a lot, also the Curry club. Just remember the main mantras - protein and plenty of speed free foods that bulk out your meal without bulking out the calories. for better weight losses look at the SP option where you load up even more on the fruit and veg and reduce the number of carbs

The best thing about SW is that it's not a diet - it's a lifestyle that you can carry on with regardless of where you are against your ideal weight. I've been educated in how to eat the things i like but just prepare them differently

Always welcome to PM me if you have any questions and I can bounce them off the OH

By observation what he said is true.

The bullet point advice above about quit drinking, exercise etc. is all well and good but many people find it so hard to do. Personally I don't but my daughter did and SW worked very well for her because it offers a whole lifestyle and ways to predict the consequences of choices.

It really is this simple at this stage. This is all you need to do, don't over complicate it.

100%!

People do not need to join a fad diet at all - Slimming World, Keto, Atkins, all just diets that amount to the same thing ultimately: make sure your calorie intake is lower than your actual calorie needs.

Work out how many calories you need ( https://blog.fitbit.com/how-many-calories-do-you-r... ) and simply eat healthily while cutting back on the amount according to how quickly you want to lose weight and what you can cope with.

I would add that exercise is vital. It helps reduce muscle loss and burns calories while toning your body and getting you fitter.

I lost over 16kg in 11 weeks this year but the key stat is it was 19% of my original body mass. I went from a BMI of 30 down to 24. And got fitter in the process and lost very little muscle mass. Admittedly, it was an extreme diet - I reduced my calorie intake to 1400 - 1600 and did 4-5 hours exercise 6 days a week (gym, cycling, walking).

I'm now up to circa 2000 calories per day, still losing albeit very slowly now, and maintaining 3-4 hours exercise per day in line with my fitness and sport goals.

I eat more healthily now but still indulge in the odd 'bad' meal. Because I can. There is no secret to dieting for a medically healthy person; just reduce calories to create a deficit and eat healthily for most of the time. Big business dieting would love you to think you need them - you really don't!

I went down from 106 kg to 86 kg in around 10 months following my own advice, although I tend to cycle twice a week for about 90 minutes a go.
I also walk a fair bit. I saved quite a lot on the shopping bill too, quitting the booze so that's a win/win.
I'm 46, 6'2" with a BMI of 24.3

That's fantastic - but 3-4 hours of exercise per day - wow!!!

Whilst i agree with the sentiment entirely regarding "fad" diets, I wouldn't personally group SW in with the others. The whole concept of SW is to learn how to eat healthily and not be deprived of anything, hence the reason it's marketed as a lifestyle rather than a diet

You Pov is perfectly valid btw, but there is a huge amount of bad education, ingrained bad habits etc. and if getting in a group environment and earning from each other works then why the hell not

I know it's the wife's business as a franchise but she is inspired by helping people - she earns about the same as she did when she was employed but the buzz she gets from helping someone is massive. An example being a guy she helped to lose 8 stone to walk his daughter down the aisle

Thanks for the replies all. Without making excuses I leave the house around 7am and get back around 7.30pm. I’m lucky if I get 20 minutes to eat lunch. At weekends I do the accounts for my families business. When I was younger I swam twice a day and competed at a very high level but I simply don’t have the time to do that amount of excercise now.

SW is more of a way of making great tasting food without the calories. I can simply just cut back but would probably have very boring meals so this seems to help us think differently about what to have for dinner or how to prepare it. Hopefully it will help me lose a bit of timber too!

well no not really. you do need to cut back on calories if you want to lose weight, its the only way.

- make a food diary, be aware of what you eat
- find out how many calories you need to eat to maintain or lose weight
- understand how many calories are in the foods you eat
- eat less of your foods or cut back on certain things and replace it with low calorie alternatives. (i.e. eat less rice, and bulk your plate with veg).

Currently using ''My Fitness Pal'' on my phone and has been pretty easy way to keep a diary and keep to a daily calorie limit. You can literally scan the barcode off anything you eat (or enter manually obviously) and factor in exercise.

I've also made a conscious effort to reduce my portion sizes, whilst also eating more regularly. I've also reduced the carbs and increased ''speed foods'' like raspberries. I'm about to have a load with a small bowl of rolled oat porridge.

exactly.
i've used myfitnesspal and it's easy enough to use to track. you can lump together various ingridients to make a custom meal as well, then divide it into how ever many portions. after while of calorie counting (which isnt hard), you get to know how many calories some foods are by heart.

i will never understand people who say 'oh no i don't do calorie counting, i don't go that far'. yet are happy to joint a slimming world and tell everyone 'ohh no, i can't eat that i've already had 4 syns today, i need something syn free'.
