Does anyone have any experience in running free to enter prize draws. In particular tickets to events w/ travel and hotels.

Some of you may have seen recently that I was starting a business revolving around an esports website. The website is under development and should launch in July. I have been drumming up interest on Twitter in the meantime and currently have 1.5k followers which I'm quite happy with, but obviously want more. A reasonable target is around the 10k region by launch.

What legalities do I have to consider to run a prize draw on Twitter? To be eligible to win users would have to RT & register on the website. The prize would be 2x VIP tickets to the next major event (CSGO if you cared?) with flights and a hotel room for the 5 nights. Estimated cost based on the competition being open to users across the world would be roughly 2k.

My understanding is that if it's free to enter, I don't have many regs at all to think about. Though obviously I could be missing something?

Any help much appreciated.

From when I looked into this yonks ago, a game of chance = gambling = gaming licence required.

Games of skill with prizes, with no element of chance or negligible, = no licence required.

Poker (skill and large amount of chance), spot the ball, fruit machines, tell me what number I'm thinking of = chance.

But, Complete the following movie title:

The [blank] of the Nile:
A) Jewel
B) Armpit
C) Crocodile

= element of skill so no gaming licence.

You can run a free prize draw and you can add a sale of something or the need to register as a condition of entry. If something is being sold, you can't increase the cost of the item or service to cover the cost of the competition.

The only thing you can't do is charge to enter the competition unless you have a 'lottery licence'.

Does your esports website involve gambling and, if so, what jurisdiction is it licensed in? You’d want to consider checking with that regulator that your competition steers very well clear of anything that might cause even the slightest problem for the licence

No, it doesn't involve gambling.
