Detectorist strike gold
Discussion
I follow a Facebook group that is to do with metal detecting.
This weekend an event called a ‘detectival’ has people from all over descend on a farm for a mass get together.....
Well, they’ve only gone and found a hoard of coins in the field! It’s being live streamed, the people are doing their nut over it....
So far found 11 gold and nearly 600 silver coins, all hammered, not stamped, so proper old. Many more to come by the look of it.
This is a dream event for so many people, and for it to happen at an organised meeting where hundreds are present is just amazing.
I suspect you’ll start seeing it on the news later....

I understand land owner gets half automatically then the rest goes to the finder? is that split between the group of the day or to the actual person who located them?

Have Heritage England or archaeologists chucked them off the site yet?
They have reps from the official organisation there. Because it’s a distributed hoard... ie, spread all over the field by ploughing, the best way forward is to let the detectors at it. There’s no other history being disturbed, they haven’t found a site of special interest.
One assumes this will be declared treasure and the payout shared between the land owner and the organising club, but I don’t know this for sure.

I'd say treasure as well, it wasn't "lost", it was buried for safekeeping. Could be a decent value, back in 1977 one of my Dads tekking partners got £100K for a hoard he found.Mr Pointy said:
Anyone have a link to the live stream?

It's Historic England or English Heritage (two separate organisations these days). Properly organised detectorist events are fine as long as they aren't held on scheduled monument sites which are legally protected, or other sites which may have prohibition notices (like some MoD sites containing unexploded ordnance). Archaeologists usually have a good relationship with proper detectorists, who obtain permission and follow correct procedure for locating and reporting finds. Proper metal detectorists are an absolute boon to have on site, they are enthusiastic about history and very well informed about artefacts, the specialist detecting magazines are superb in this respect. The problem is nighthawkers who turn up on sites without permission basically in order to treasure hunt, they generally have no interest in history and work to obstruct professional archaeologists and destroy the archaeological record. They can all f

Watching the link makes you realise how well observed ‘The Dectorists’ was (the McKenzie Crook thing on BBC). OP - you obviously have some insights into this community. How did they receive said program? In good humour?
Recieved very very well. Gareth nailed them and they appreciated his research. Gassing Station | The Lounge | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
