Freelander 2 or Petrol Toureg?

M140i is due to arrive soon and the Discovery sport is being handed back.

So, we are mulling over another AWD type SUV. The budget is around £8,000.

Have heard brilliant things about the FL2. A lot of them are without DPF especially before 2010. I am somewhat surprised at the strong prices they command.

Guy down the road has just bought a petrol Toureg. Cracking motor.

Any opinions?

Freelander 2's are very good cars, petrol Touaregs can drink fuel so I'd be looking at some other options:

Just done a 500-mile round trip in our old FL2 (overnight stay on the midweek). Done 93k miles and now 11 years old - replaced with a newer one for my wife. Comfy and pretty quiet / effortless. If I want about to get an iPace I would be fairly happy to keep using it

I’ve got a 64 plate Freelander 2 HSE.

In short, I bloody love it. Comfy, reasonable pace, feels luxurious, fantastic driving position, better than any I’ve experienced. I get 35-40 mpg, 30 when towing my race car. Tax is £140 for that model year, and insurance for me (47) is £212.

I got it as an approved used, so 2 year warranty plus a free LR off-road experience (not my thing, but fun nonetheless).

I borrowed a Discovery Sport for a couple of weeks, but I genuinely preferred the Freelander.

is it the diesel or the petrol? If it diesel do you have any issues with the DPF?

Thanks guys, I went to see a 2007 FL2 today.

Was in great condition and drove very well. Impressed, and coming from a brand new Discovery Sport I have to say its comparable in terms of experience.

Reckon FL2 is the one

Something rings a bell about the Touareg wears through centre bearings on the propshaft a lot. Something to do with the 50/50 power distribution I think, but can't remember for sure. Worth looking up, may only apply to diesels or certain models.

Diesel. Never had any issues with dpf- might be pre dpf? Don’t know!

The rear diff will fail at around 70k miles. Just did a front wheel bearing and battery at 93k. Noticed today that it’s a bit grumbly and noisy at low speeds but quietens down nicely at motorway speeds

My cousin had a Touareg that developed starting issues, many trips to VW resulted in a new engine at the staggering cost of £20,000 ot which VW contributed 50%!
