Perhaps I should be directing this 'Q' to out Transmissions' Legal Expert, so bung it in Mark if u want (there's good english for a start lol)
I'm sure I've read; 'It is a legal requirement for a car to have demister'....or words very similar.
When I made this sort sort of remark to an aquaintance (non JOC member I hasten to add), I was asked what the hell I was on about, and don't be silly.
My Jeep is a convertable. No roof/soft top/ hard top....so, does it need a demister? The system was non existent when I bought the Jeep.
I need to know as I'm rebuilding and trying to stay on the right side of the MOT tester. Myth of Fact?.....answers on a postcard please. (also been told if you take your jeep into mot testing with the windshield folded down, you don't need wipers.)

This topic is one of those grey areas as if you read various official documents such as the SVA manual and the like it says the windscreen should have a method of demisting fitted.
If I get a chance I will try to research this further but currently I am very busy at work so tend to get worn out and ready for my bed when I get home in the evening.

I don't think they are mentioned in the MOT manual (but ours is nearly 10 years old so don't quote me).
They are a definite SVA requirement as part of 'clearing the screen'.

Hi boys
My G.P. has no demisters and went thro' the MOT no bother. Also, my G.P. has no roof. I am certain that a topless motor does not need to have demisters - simply the windscreen will not mist up.

Just for the hell of it, I forgot to mention my Jeep is a 1971 reg, so I guess 1971 rules kind of apply ....to a point of course.
thanks every one

The regs that apply, are the regs in force at the time the vehicle was first constructed.
This is the reason why 'Q' plate vehicles are not subject to emmission regs, so it would seem to follow that the demister regs are those from the same era.
As I understand it a Jago Jeep fitted with a hardtop is still not a van or estate. Only a lid which is integral makes the change as far as the vehicle type is concerned. Therefore whether or not a hardtop is fitted it is the regs applying to convertibles that apply.
I am almost certain under the old regs convertibles did not need demisters. Under the later rules used for the SVA only vehicles with a fold down or removable windscreen are exempt - and they do not need wipers or screen washer either.
