Received a phone call from my Son this afternoon, (long story but we haven't been in contact for the last couple of years) who works in the hotel trade, has been working for a local hotel since beginning of December 2018 as a night porter (11 hour nights) and has not been paid regularly, he has a total of 3 payslips in his possession, he has a spreadsheet of dates / hours worked and is owed approximately 132 hours wages.

He is due to work tomorrow night I have advised him to go to citizens advice, a local employment solicitor and see his doctor for a sick note for work related stress tomorrow morning.

Is there any further advice that the readership of pistonheads can offer?

Why is he claiming work related stress?

How often should he be paid? When he wasn't paid and he asked why, what was he told?

Some firms don't give payslips, I think this is due to cost. It's happened me. When I asked for one I was asked why. I simply told them it's best practice, I want to know what I earn and pay in tax and NI. I also wanted to confirm amount of expenses. After this I always received a payslip but was also the only one who did so!

I prefer to receive them via email, as won't end up losing them. Or having to store boxes full of paperwork.
Due to recent GDPR changes, these are now password protected too. Even if the password is your postcode.

It is, no later than payday (assuming that OP's son is an "Employee" and not "self employed").

Have you suggested these options over and above 'Talk to your employer first and see what they say' because you want to try and show you know your onions to your estranged son?

Disputes and/or misunderstandings are far better initially dealt with between the two parties involved, there could be many reasons for his worries.

Son is an employee.
He is paid weekly ( one week in hand).
Business he works for is Family owned.
He has tried to contact the owner on multiple occasions without success (not available / will ring you back etc).
I don't know if he has a contract of employment.
Reason he is stressed he has no money for bills / food etc.

I will know more when I speak with him tonight.

Update

Son visited Citizens Advice and was advised to raise a grievance letter, which he has now done, the hotel has 5 working days (from receipt of the letter(sent recorded delivery)). He now has to wait until next week before taking any further action.

He is now updating his CV, and looking for alternative employment.

For information the hotel in question: Companies House website reveals "old hotel name" had 450k of debt 30k of that is owed to the local council and has re-invented itself as "new name hotel" under the ownership of the same family.

Good luck to your son, hope he is OK.

He needs to get away from there ASAP.

Has he actually done that strange thing we all used to do?? Talking to his employers face to face instead of just sending a very impersonal letter?
