So I have a 2013 M5 with extended warranty and roadside, but not BMW emergency service.

Was on the way to Silverstone yesterday and a few miles before I got there, I got the dreaded drivetrain malfunction light and the car went into limp mode.

I was there most of the day, so left the car for an hour and restarted it and the fault had cleared.

On the way home, as soon as I accelerated, it happened again and the car wouldn’t rev past 3k. Continued home and left it overnight.

This morning I started the car and it ran very rough indeed, blue smoke on startup and would stall as soon as I touched the gas.

Having got home and read the warranty handbook, it would seem that I have made a mistake by taking it home, because I am only covered for roadside assistance if the car is half a mile from home or more.

Am I now going to have to pay to get it recovered to a main dealer?

You couldn't limp it half a mile away?

Yea, just seems crazy that I would have to do that, park it up on the side of the road, rather than a safe & simple recovery on my drive.

If it's within half a mile of home...

...you'll have to pay for recovery. They'll probably ask if you want to upgrade for some stupid cost. Have a look about locally for someone who can recover your vehicle from home, shouldnt really cost more than £50.
