Apparently its a good, simple indicator of hearth health, being able to do 10 or more is good news and 40 is exceptional ?

https://www.nhs.uk/news/heart-and-lungs/struggling...

I never really do them but I do go to the gym and lift weights but its a really good exercise and one I think I will do a few of more regularly.

I thought I should be able to and I just tried and did 40 fairly easily with decent form, could have done another 10 or more but there was a hint of tonights tea coming up biggrin large pile of salad with loads of raw onion that seems to have been sat in my throat since 6.30.

Scary that there are plenty of chaps that cant do 10 press ups, I am no athlete and am a bit overweight but that is pretty bad if 10 is beyond you, obviously allowing for muscular or skeletal injuries.

No chance. never been good at press ups. Could at one time easily do 100+ sit ups and a couple of years ago could cycle 100 miles a week and still not able to do ten press ups properly. Cycling back on the schedule now the weather is better.

Load of nonsense surely. I could have terrible cardiovascular health and have strong arms and be able to do 40 press ups or more

No?

I struggle to do two. Mixture of over weight and weak arms. It's weird as my arms put muscle on fairly quickly, but I just can't do them.

I was looking at joining the army and you needed to do 40 (I think) in two minutes, similar amount of sit ups. I could do the sit ups pretty much from day one. Press ups I was fked. Just couldn't do them to save my life!

You could, but there's a correlation between push ups and heart health. There's also one between grip strength and heart health, and ankle bracelets and STDs...

No, never been any good that them. I'm slim to muscular but I'm very tall, which I've always assumed to count against me.

40 really isn't that many, but it's far beyond the reach of the average male Brit who's hopelessly out of shape, riding a push bike up a decent hill is a much better indicator of fitness.

I've done the 100 press ups app a few times, a good way to easily and quickly get your press up numbers up if that's what you're looking to do.

I never do press-ups but train in the gym regularly and do some form of exercise at least 6 days a week, a mate recently challenged me to see if I could do 40 (I assume he had seen a similar article) and I could only just about do it, the first 25 or so were pretty easy but after about 35 it got very tough

I presume this is using a body flat, nose to floor form, not the sort of thing where people seem to only have a 2 inch range of motion?

I've always struggled to do 10 press ups and I even did back when I was a teenager. I can run six miles a week no problem at all though(did a half marathon a few years ago), I've never been to the gym or lifted weights though and I guess that would help a lot if I did that.

I remember working with a chap who could do 50 press ups easily(really quick too) and I thought that it was very impressive because I was so crap at them!

I’ve always found push ups to be easy. I’ve not been to the gym for about 9 months due to medical issues but could still probably do 20+ right now (might have a go later).

Overhand pull-ups have always been a struggle though! Not sure what that indicates wink

My cardio is generally fairly good - I can easily do a sub 7 minute 2k row, which I've seen claimed as being a good reference for being "fit". But think I'd struggle to do 40 press ups in one go - maybe just about do 30.

So these claims are a load of bks. Bit like the sitting/standing test which can "estimate how long you will live" - by that standard my mother in law should have died 30 years back, but she's still going fairly well at 91.

All these kind of things are rough indicators that are broadly accurate ON AVERAGE. A bit like BMI. BMI is mostly irrelevant if you carry a lot of muscle mass and not much fat, but that is a tiny minority of the population; on average, it is a good indicator.

(I am told that simple old waist size is a decent indicator of various health risk factors.)

FWIW, I expect I could do 40 press ups. But I could probably double however many I can do in about a month if I trained for reps. That is another flaw with this kind of thing - if you train specifically for the test, you make the outcome less relevant!

Read a few articles, notice the question mark on the end as well.
