Hello,

This is my first post and thanks for listening to my questions.

I have found a very good deal on an infiniti q30 petrol 1.6, 2 year-old with only 2500 miles. I'm about to pay the deposit but started having some second thoughts.

Since infiniti is leaving the UK market, do you think the reselling value will be affected? I am expecting it to depreciate by 3000-4000 in the next 3 years when I will be planning to sell the car (eg current value is around 14000, I will expect to sell it around 10.000 pounds in 3 years and 40000 miles later).

Do you think it will retain value and that I will be able to sell it? If not, should I pay a little bit more (1.5-2k) and buy a used merc a180 with roughly 15.000 miles?

Awesome lurking!

I'd take a look at the equivalent value of an older, higher mileage car and perhaps reconsider how much you'll lose in depreciation over the term. Merc will be similar in terms of depreciation but then there's a lot more older Mercs out there to base your judgement on.

Cars typically lose between 1/3 and 1/2 of their value over three years. You’re hoping to beat that on a car which isn’t exactly a sales success, and where the manufacturer is leaving the market? In three years I think you’d be doing well if it was still worth half the current price, but that’s just a guess...

What do older ones go for on Autotrader?

I don't know about the Q30, but from my experience with a Q50 I think you'd be lucky to get £10k in 3 years time with 40k miles on the clock. The residuals on Infiniti are pretty awful (even though they build some nice cars in my opinion). Even now they are considered niche and many dealers just don't want them...that's only going to get worse when they pull out of Western Europe.
When I traded the Q50, the ONLY place that showed interest in actually taking it was the infiniti centre in Leeds....and for a car that had a list price of just under £50k new (it was the AWD Hybrid version with the full sport tech specification) and was still (just) under manufacturer warranty the best offer was around £18k from memory....Infiniti dealerships had them available with less mileage for sale at around £21k so well over 50% depreciation in 3 years.

Realistically, I'd be expecting a p/ex value of £7k and a private sale value of £8k for that car at 5 years. I can also imagine it being a complete pain to shift privately, so i'd base your figures on the p/ex value.

If it's from a main dealer, look at the PCP illustration for a 3 year/ 10k PA deal and see what the balloon is. This will be the ballpark of its expected p/ex value and a good enough basis for your calculations.

It’s difficult to say as we don’t know how much the car is, if it’s the bargain of the century and way under list price then you may be ok. If it’s at a main dealer and at market price you will lose £2/3k the minute you drive off the forecourt, run the reg through WBAC to see what it’s trade value is today. I think £4K over 3 years is very optimistic.

Those cars are the bargain of the year so far I've now supplied six of them one to a family member & with all the ULEZ talk prices are firming up nicely & they're a cracking car averaging 36mpg on my family members commute (which is into zone 2 & through Blackwall tunnel) which for a car with a 3.5 V6 is superb.

I source cars & I didn't even know the Q50h S existed until early last year

They are niche cars, the lack of dealerships didn't help but I think with the Q30 once people realise they're an A Class they'll have sensible depreciation.

Q60's depreciation is in line with the equivalent Audi S5.

OP residuals are very dependent on spec for example the Premium Premium Tech Sport & Sport Tech's seem to have good residuals in comparison to the other mainstream makes I have to say the fit & finish is really good on these.

I think the fact you believe the car is a bargain now says a lot about it's standing in the market and in reality it's probably not as much a bargain as you think it is, the price you are seeing now probably says a lot about it's projected depreciation over the coming years.
I think a 10k future value for the time period is very optimistic, if you are worried about depreciation go for the Merc instead.

It's relative in terms of cost & I was being specific in terms of that particular model, if you look at the more mainstream model, the 2.2d Q50 Sport which uses exactly the same drivetrain as the C220, the AMG line is similar levels of (you'd need a Premium Plus to match the Q50 Sports spec) trim to the Q50 Sport with the Sport having more spec & real leather seats.

3 Years Old no more than 20k

C220 AMG Line Manual

The price difference is £1500 which is more than the price now here's the thing the C220d AMG Line starts from 39k retail vs 34k for the Q50 Sport so as you can see the Mercedes has depreciated more.

Another thing to bare in mind is that the used market is less badge conscious than those buying new so the depreciation often evens out.

Now the Q30 seems to be pretty decent

A180 Sport Executive these two cars are exactly the same seats switches & drivetrain:

As you can see the price difference isn't that big but the new retail price is a fair bit different.
