Project Car Suggestions

In an unexpected turn of fate my wife has authorised a domestic purchase order for a project car to the value of circa 2K but receipts can be altered and man maths applied.
I've been thinking about the criteria , Interesting, fast(in old money terms) parts availability,4 Seats (isofix a bonus), should have come from the factory with a cassette deck as standard, It's got to fit in our fairly generous single garage,
I'm ok with spanners and electrics, would be interesting in learning welding,
I'm looking for suggestions so far I seem to be settling on a predictable selection from the 90s?
944 - surely all the good cheap ones have long gone and a Turbo will be out of reach regardless
Corrado - future classic
Polo G40 - rare
Mk2 Golf (i've owned 5 previously) overpriced these days for anything that isn't a dog
Saab 900 Turbo (owned one already)
Boxster(I'll sacrifice the 4 seat requirement)

For £2k you'll get a decent 924, maybe an S. Obviously far less exciting than the below suggestions but nice and easy to work on, despite a slight lack of parts availability. Also doesn't really tick the fast requirement.
There's a 944 Turbo body shell with no parts in it for sale in Germany for ~2k.
You'd probably get a rough XJS or XJS for that much, there's a V12 XJS on auto trader for £1700, but looks to be a disaster.

Ahh very good shout, a mate had a 172 when they came out and I imagine they still feel quick by today standardsAs a project car they're a good bet. Easy to work on, tons of parts available old and new, small, easy to store, fun to drive.

OP, I'd forget all the ropey cars that were expensive to buy in the first place with dodgy bodywork especially for your first project car.
172/182 is a great shout.
Make it into a fast road/track car for little outlay while updating and improving it.

Thanks all for the feedback so far, I am especially liking the 924/44 I did promise myself one of these in the 90s when they were about the same price.

CcAAOSwkjZcpio6I had a 944 turbo for a while. It was a nice car and of your list. The nicest out of the lot. I decided to sell it because I also own a 928S4 but I think I should have kept it and sold the 928 instead as it's a lot more fun.
I'm not sure if the non turbo cars are as much fun. Parts are expensive. If you're looking for something quick and engaging to drive. I think that you're missing out if you don't include a late 70's or 80's BMW. An E12 5 series or E24 6 series is a lot more engaging and more affordable to own.

Toyota Celica 190? £2K will get you one of the best examples at the moment but you won't get a GT for that money.
Or a Mk1 Audi TT? You could get into a 225 for that money. Could be ropey though.
I suppose it depends how much of a 'project' you're after. Broken Nissan 350Z's are available with your man maths and project taken to the extreme.

So I should be picking up this VR6 tomorrow,
It comes with a epic amount of invoices and supporting paperwork, it's a bit rough round the edges but mechanically seems sound. Slightly over budget but it was local.
