Frustrated interview rant
Discussion
For the second time in a few months I've gone through an interview process for a senior role at a well known tech company. Both times this took 6 or 7 phone/video interviews. Last time the job was put on hold, except that I know that they did hire for it. This time, silence. Nothing. Promised feedback last week, but nothing at all.
I'm assuming it's a dead opportunity, but WTF makes companies think that 7 interviews makes for good hiring decisions? Or that just going quiet is acceptable?
Rant over. Bah.

Thanks! It was two different companies, order of size and renown not far from Google/AWS etc. In the first case I was told that they'd be making me an offer, then they had a well publicised hiring freeze, then hired someone else. It's possible the job spec changed.
This latest one is a job I'd really like. I'm only miffed because I was told early last week that I'd have feedback by midweek, and we're now a week later and nothing. I felt the interviews went well, I can certainly do the job, but it's a bit of a step down in seniority for a step up in organisation. We'll see what happens but I'm not holding my breath. I will ping the hiring manager at the end of the week if I don't hear anything.

That's the bit that I find totally indefensible. When they specify a time when they will reconnect - and then just don't. That is very, very unprofessional and extremely rude, considering the effort and time you have invested. That said, I need to add one small caveat. There was a time when I was responsible for recruiting business to consumer sales people (I can't bring myself to type B2C - Gah! I just did!). I deliberately did not call them back, because I wanted to see if they had the gumption to do a follow-up call. Needless to say, this is probably irrelevant in the case of an IT role.
I don't wonder that you are pissed-off. I would be too.
I've been waiting for feedback for a job as well. I must be one of the very few people with the qualifications and experience to do the role, which doesn't mean I'm a shoe in though.
According to the recruitment consultant the hiring manager is off on compassionate leave. It could be true or they could be spinning me a line but I don't know why they wouldn't just say that I didn't get the job, if it was true. Something similar could be happening to you.
For those without school age kids - it is currently the easter hols around here so things slow down as people are off. Brexit uncertainty and change of financial year is also slowing decisions I think.

I was once interviewed for a role specifically because I was an outsider to the industry and wanted to bring in fresh ideas.
Interview went brilliantly and I was told to expect an offer that week.
Two weeks later I was told they'd given the job to someone "with more relevant industry experience"
WTF?

Currently on this trail at the moment
Co 1 - I am now at 3rd stage interview which will be happening later this week/early next and then a decision
Co 2 - Had 2nd last week, was told would get back to me early this week, so far nothing, will give them til tomorrow and chase but previous experience suggests I haven't got it and they are just putting off making that call

I'd view it as you dodging a bullet
Definitely this, If the recruiter can't figure out what questions to ask in the first interview they get a second chance, if they ask for a third interview do you really want to work for some who either can't make decisions or is scared of making them.Gassing Station | Jobs & Employment Matters | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
