BMW Approved used X1 haggling
Discussion
Looking for advice on haggling over an approved used X1 in our local Sytner dealer.
It will be a cash buy and I have read that some of them just won’t budge on price as it’s cash and not finance.
Wife and I went into the same dealer a few weeks ago and test drove one (it’s for her) and the salesman said no negotiation basically and said ‘we might consider a few hundred off’.
So i’ve been trawling autotrader since and the BMW approved used site.
Another good one has come up at the local dealer again so booked in tomorrow - it’s with the same salesman.
I’ve compiled a list of similar cars from other BMW dealers on for cheaper with similar or less mileage. Will this allow me more wiggle room for haggling?
The car in question has done 23k miles, early 2016 plate and is on for £21,750.
In contrast I have found one for £20,192 that has done 4K miles - also 2016 plate.
Surely this gives me some room?
Trying to work out what is reasonable - we originally had a £19k budget. Happy to up it to £20k for the right car.
We will also be p/x’ing her old Polo and they agreed £1000 for that.
Thoughts? Any help appreciated!
Cheers

They’ll budge if there’s no one else interested in car , they’ve had it a while , there’s some value in them meeting the sales target. Or a combo of all 3. You’ve got to be prepared to walk away , easier I guess if it’s your local dealer as easy to come back.
Maybe if price is hard to budge , see if you’ll get a 2nd year AUC warranty. Or some other value add.
I presume there’s a difference in spec in your 2 examples.
Have you tried WBAC on the Polo , to get shot , then you are simply going in with an aim to get best cash deal?
It’s a decent SUV , I daily one. It’s on 42k now , 2017 owned from new. I went for 18 inch wheels , non RFTs. I have adaptive suspension , not so key on the smaller wheels but I’d say a big plus if you go for 19s.

This! The 2.0d wasn't really worth the extra £££ when new over the 18d but as used cars there's bugger all in it really. 4000 to 23'000 is a hell of a mileage jump and if the spec is similar (X Drive?) then the lower mileage cheaper car is a no brainer. Stratstone used to be the only 'pile 'em high sell 'em cheap' BMW merchants with no haggling but Sytners seem to have followed suit. Basically, they will have paid top whack for this one in p/x and will need to turn a modest profit. They will know from group stock what's out there and for what price so you won't really achieve much. If you're happy with the spec of the 4000 mile car then go for it. Leather, automatic and Nav plus a decent colour are the biggies.

Thanks - haven’t done WBAC on the Polo - I think i’d only get £1500 max private sale anyway (2006 plate with 73k on the clock). Was surprised BMW would offer a grand to be honest. Maybe if price is hard to budge , see if you’ll get a 2nd year AUC warranty. Or some other value add.

Glad to hear you rate the X1 - my wife has got used to the creature comforts of newer beemers since driving my F31 335 around for a while!

They even have another (same spec) X1 in black that has done 16k miles also 2016 plate on for the same amount (£21,750) as the one that has done 23k miles - sorry but where is the logic in that. I will be pointing that out!
The spec is basically the same - it’s xLine vs sport and added extras was either lighting package or heated front seats...
Will let you know how I get on - think it will be ‘interesting’...
Is it worth sacrificing spec for miles on a diesel , designed for higher miles ? What on earth has the 4K one been doing? Can that be detrimental , DPF etc.
22k £ seems high for a 3 year old , paid not much more than 11k£ More for brand new , high spec.
20d I have , would not want smaller. It does the job for my run of the mill commute. I drive a M3 otherwise so the X1 doesn’t escape some fast/hard driving.
Do any of your cars have service pack , 2016 cars would be 5 years or 50k.
Second oil service adds various filters and bits and (it was free for me) is supposedly the expensive one. So getting that done be good.

They may be offering a grand, but standing it in at £600, thereby already discounting the new car by £400.Glad to hear you rate the X1 - my wife has got used to the creature comforts of newer beemers since driving my F31 335 around for a while!

Agree with this, which is why WBAC and there are others too are worth a shot. I still think their pricing is off - same model in same dealer basically with 16k miles on for cheaper! Wife and I have set budget at £20k max and if they won’t budge we’ll just walk.
Quick update - we bought the car.
I had a work meeting so we had 15 minutes to do a deal and I pressured the salesman as much as I could.
Was on for £21,750, then reduced to £22,250. They originally said they would do £750 part ex for our car. Told them I wanted it for £19,500, they can have our car and we'd sign. In the end we settled on £19,750 with gap insurance included (I didn't really want it and I know they get more commision from this!).
All in all I think we did ok - part of me does wonder if I could have gone lower but at that point we might have been taking the piss.
Means my 335d will be safe from kerbing now she's got a new car :P
Thanks for the help guys.

well done both. I think GAP insurance is good, wouldn't have bought it from them, but surely not to be sniffed at as freebie I had a work meeting so we had 15 minutes to do a deal and I pressured the salesman as much as I could.
