Never realised I could put black plates on my TR 6 as it’s a 74, I thought the cut off for black plates was L reg 72 I have put these on I think they look so much better

I thought the cut off for black plates was July 72 as well. From the August plate change you had to have reflective plates.

When did this change, as it's been mentioned on here a number of times?

I think black, but if possible an older looking plate. It looks too new/after market.

I did think it would be 50 50 opinion between the two. I understand why some picked yellow regard to original age related and the colour of the car, but I do like how the black sits.

Irrespective of the car, I prefer to see the style that would have been on it when it was first registered.

I think it's got to have been manufactured (not necessarily registered) before January 1st 1973.

That makes the OP black plate illegal. But I prefer the yellow plate anyway. Especially on a yellow car.

ETA: I stand corrected, it is Jan 75, but vehicle must be registered as historic.

Prefer black, the yellow looks like a colour mismatch.

What about the exhaust though,did they not have twin tail pipes originally, they look much better.

Black but pressed aluminium not plastic, like these. I have them on a 1974 Landy and they look great..

Keep up with the current law.
The reason '1975' keeps getting mentioned and is still on some websites is because it was 2015 when the law changed to allow Historic vehicles of 40 years old to display them. It has rolled over each year since.

DVLA INF104:

'Traditional number plates for vehicles made
before 1 January 1973
Vehicles made before 1 January 1973 may display traditional
‘black and white’ number plates (for example, white, silver or
grey characters on a black plate). From April 2019 vehicles
manufactured before 1 January 1979 are also able to display
traditional ‘black and white’ number plates. You must:
• have applied to DVLA
• be registered within the ‘historic vehicles’ tax class.
The 40-year exemption date rolls forward automatically each
year on 1 April'
