About to order new tyres for my daily (90 VFR 750) and got them down to 120 delivered for a set of 120/70/17 and 180/55/17 from Tweeks via eBay.

Looked at Camskill and Blackcircles but no joy. Have I missed somewhere?

Not that I've found, but worth noting that some ProTyres will price match, we have a friendly admin guy down here, I just showed him the price on Ebay and he matched the price for me and had them in the same day.

Interesting, I'll try that too. Cheers!

Oponeo is worth a look, I believe they ship from Germany, but I've never had a problem.

Just make sure the date of manufacture are in the last 12 months if poss. Some ebay sellers may want to get rid of older ones, so I always check with them before buying.

Agreed. Always send a message first for this reason.

Or you could pay an extra few quid and help keep a local bike shop open...?

Maybe skip a pint at the pub, not order a carry-out when there's food in the fridge, get the Mrs to buy own-brand instead of Kellogs...?

In my experience it's not "an extra few quid" though, is it. Same for car tyres - it's generally a tens of pounds per tyre. Much as I prefer to give my money to a local business when possible I cannot justify (in the case of car tyres) hundreds extra. Money doesn't grow on trees.

What would a set of, say, Michelin Pilot Powers (your standard 190/5x/17 and 120/70/17) cost fitted from a local bike shop these days?

You're not campaign apples with apples there. I've never known a set of tyres bought on the Internet come fitted.

I've been looking for local places for tyres as well, these days most seem to offer a fitting service for reasonable money. One doesn't even bother ordering tyres, and just gets customers to do it instead!

I bought a set of Bridgestone T30s from ebay for £190 and a local-ish place quoted me £250 fitted. I fitted mine but only because it saved me the time of riding somewhere to get it done and I like the idea of self-sufficiency. The place that quoted me $250 was 20 miles away, the nearest shop to me wanted closer to £300. If you've got a shop locally who don't take the piss it's not worth not using them once you factor in the cost of paying someone to fit the tyres or paying disposal for the old tyres if you fit them yourself unless you're trying to save every penny in which case go for it, fitting tyres isn't difficult.

My local shop quoted me £250 fitted for a set of Avons that retailed at £169, I'm all for shops making a living but some take the piss, that's £90 an hour, for a small 2 man shop, Pilot Powers were a similar price and they are a 10 year old design now and £140 a pair, I go to the local KTM place now who fit them for £30 to loose wheels

I don't drink.
I don't eat take-aways.
I buy my own food.

I don't ask for handouts from anyone so I don't expect any. If the local bike shop can match the price I'll use them, if not I won't.

I took the old ones to the tip last weekend - we don't have limits, charges, restrictions on trailers etc.

Lucky. Ours charge me a fiver a tyre, I can't take a trailer and I had to get a special type of pass for my camper van.

Im with you on that one, for those of us without tyre fitting kit, its worrying that many people dont even consider trying their local dealer or even making a comparison...you may not need any consumables ever from them if you buy online but if your bike breaks down or you need some other assistance with it like a puncture and need a tyre there and then , if main dealers are the only option, we will all pay for it..

On the otherside of the cost coin, when you take into account the cost of fitting etc, ive not found it worthwhile to buy a set of tyres online Vs Churchills Motorcycles in Pottersbury..

I paid £60 extra Vs the online price to have my other local dealer fit the new tyres to my RD500, seeing as he picks up and then delivers the bike with the tyres fitted/balanced etc, I was happy to pay that extra, in reality, with them just taking the bike away as was, it wasnt much extra at all for the service/convenience, that was at RPM bikes in Northants.
