I bought a citroen c5 auto diesel to tow a caravan, coz it did 25 mpg towing and nearly 50 not. Its getting on a bit and the caravan has gone so dont need a "big " car anymore but do I!!! I have the use of wifes little honda for day to day runs etc.

I like automatics, I like the mpg of diesels BUT I cant see me doing more than 3000 miles pa. For some here their eyes are now bleeding...."you cant have a diesel if you do less than X miles pa" they're crying to themselves. Well you can if you want, but then again......

Anyway. Thinking of the Octavia, or Yeti, Wife saw an XC60 and went all weak at the knees and a CR-v looked nice.

I have up to 10k cash....thoughts??

On a serious note, have you actually compared costs for petrol against diesel for 3k miles taking into account the cost difference and ad blue etc - I think you may be surprised.

Small petrol is the way to go if you are worried about economy.

Where did Herbs say that diesel was evil? The cost of ad blue, where applicable, is worth considering. So im not sure how his post was stupid.

For 3000 miles a year a modern diesel is not the thing to buy, you may think you are saving money but the potential repair bills for such short trips will negate any perceived cost savings on fuel, which by the time you add in the cost of adblue, diesel being 5-10p per litre more expensive will be minuscule.

You would be better off with a small petrol, or even better a big petrol engine. If you like the CRV then look towards the petrol version, they are not rapid but a very nice comfortable car.

Also a diesel for that sort of mileage will gery quickly have DPF and EGR issues. Plus the economy of diesels is poor when they are cold, so if doing <5mile journeys will not benefit much from diesel economy.

Are your 3000 miles per year lots of short journeys (get a petrol) or occasional use for long journeys (get a diesel)?

I have both, but would not have a diesel if only doing 3k/year.

If the petrol does 35mpg and the diesel does 50mpg you are going to save just over £100 p.a. on fuel

Sounds like perfect low capacity turbo petrol territory. Almost diesel like torque without the implications of running a diesel on low mileages.

I own a diesel car! (as well as electric and petrol) so has nothing to do with evil or beautiful - it's simply what is the best tool for the application.

If you don't want advice, then why bother posting on a forum?

It was a new one on me too when I bought my Mrs a diesel Yeti. Fabulous little car by the way - and one I would definitely consider.

Ad Blue is a liquid that is poured into a filling area in the boot (in a Yeti). It is a product that is supposed to lower emissions - if you run out of it, the car will not start.

The neck of the filler in the boot has a special fitting and this corresponds to particular bottles of the stuff. You need to always ensure you have a supply of the stuff in the boot as you do not want to run out.

It's also worth mentioning the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter) if you are not used to modern diesel cars. Whilst this next bit sounds unbelievable, it is true. Cars with DPF's are NOT designed for short journeys - the brochures and handbooks make this nearly clear (!). If you do short journeys the DPF will fail and they are expensive to repair.
