I was washing the other halfs car yesterday when I heard a loud aircraft approaching, Iooked up and I'm convinced it was a Mustang.

Are there any flying in the UK? It had black and white stripes on each wing, it was also getting a bit of a shift on so didn't have time to get my phone out and take a terrible picture rofl

It looked fantastic as it went over and sounded amazing, made my day.

I'm on the Warwickshire/Midlands border.

Seems like there are a few then which is good news, hopefully it'll come over again soon. We've had a Spitfire, some Apaches and Chinooks before so it's another one for the list.

I was over at Duxford last week and I counted at least four airworthy P-51s in the hangers there.

My favourite WW2 fighter along with the Spitfire.

A beautiful plane.

Was invaluable as an escort to US bombers when fitted with long range fuel tanks towards the end of the war.

Yes the one at Sywell (Northants) was up and about over our house yesterday. I heard the supercharger scream before I saw the plane. Quite a different tone to a Spitfire.

I've heard that the characteristic whine associated with the P-51 is generated by air flowing over the gun ports.

It's the P-51's very own blue note

One of the aircraft restoration films proved this to be the cause by playing a high pressure air hose over the gun ports.

As mentioned above, that noise isn't the supercharger.

For a very audible supercharger scream/whine, you need to hear the DB605 in a late model Me109 smile

Gorgeous aren’t they? I actually prefer them to the Spitfire.

I often see this beauty flying around the Midlands, the sound stirs the soul cloud9

It's quite a bit bigger than a Spitfire.

Best looking (IMHO) was the P-51B/C with the 'Malcolm hood'...... shame Berlin Express couldn't have stayed for another season in the UK frown
