Hi All,

Just looking for some advice really regarding my Audi A4 2003 3.0 multitronic convertible.

I first noticed an issue when I would put it into Drive and it would judder for a second or two before pulling away, it wouldn't do this all the time though so I didn't think it was anything too serious. I'd never had any other problems with gears slipping or anything, but one evening I put my foot down to pull away from a roundabout and all of a sudden I lost drive altogether. The engine was still running but when I put my foot down it would just rev. I tried to put it into manual mode but it just was not engaging any gear...not even reverse.

I need some advise on how best to properly diagnose what the issue is without having to spend a couple of hundred quid to find out. I haven't yet taken it to a garage to get the codes read, I have however got one of the cheapo home ones but nothing significant is highlighted. I've had a couple of people tell me that the gearbox is gone and will need rebuilding / replacing, but I've also heard that it could just be the ECU needs replacing / rebuilding? Also I've heard that it could just be the transmission fluid?

Like I say I would rather not spend hundreds on getting someone to strip it down and diagnose but appreciate if this is the only real way. I certainly won't be getting a new gearbox for it, I'll just sell it for spares / repairs.

Many thanks in advance
Gary

Job #1
Check gearbox fluid level/oil colour.

Job #2
If job #1 shows very dirty or low fluid do fluid & filter change on gearbox.

Job #3
If job #1 shows good fluid & level or Job #2 doesn't fix it, open wallet REALLY wide & throw it all at a local auto specialist.
