My Rover 200 is making a VERY loud screeching sound at start up and when idling, from the engine bay. Does anyone know what this can be, I don;t want to be in country and have something snap, break etc. It is audible over the engine noise. Could spirited driving be the cause?

Sure sounds like a slipping belt. Carry a spare so if it goes AWOL you won't get into bother.

if it snaps your water pump wont turn and your alternator wont charge, the alternator light should come on straight away if this happens.

adjusting a fan belt is a piece of pish. slacken the adjuster bar bolt and slacken the 2 bolts on the bottom that secure the alternator to the block, use a bar to move the alternator and take the slack out of the belt but dont take all the slack out as it does need a little or it can cause premature wear on the alternator/water pump bearings.

personally i would just change the belt.

If it snaps then you'll need to get it replaced. Bear in mind that it might not be the belt as such, but a power steering pump, water pump, etc - anything that it powers.
