I have borrowed a mates road legal quad for a couple of weeks whilst he is on holiday - parked it in the recess at the side of my house in the access to path down side of my house which it just squeezes into and it is visable from the road when looking up my driveway, The first couple of nights I have blocked it in with my car (forgot last night and tonight)

Nipped out into the front garden for a smoke about 10mins ago and perched on the bench puffing away, could hear voices along the street but nothing unusual - then I spotted a group of 6-7 young lads walking in the shadows on the opposite side of the street - hoodies and B/ball caps. As they got opposite my house one of them pointed at the upstairs window where the glow from the PC was visable from the window. They didnt initially see me in the front garden and started to cross the street towards my driveway and spotted me (I'm pretty sure) and heads down trying to look casual they altered direction and walked down the street :scratchchin: a few seconds later I stood up and could see them looking back as they walked along the street.

Get the feeling they may have been having a recce prior to nicking it or am I being paranoid.

Car is now blocking it in making it impossible to steal unless they want to try lifting it over the top of it.

I don't think its really worth reporting to the :cop:s as its only my suspicions but I'm tempted to move the car and rig up a little security device (alarm) and teach the (if my suspicions are correct) little barstewards a lesson

:scratchchin: Hmmm!

I'd say your instincts are spot on, hope both toys stay safe. Doubt if plod would be interested as it stands.

Post-crime interest might be limited to issuing a CRN. Could you turn it into a 'race-crime'? That gets on their radar. Or, better still, if the quad is stolen, say you saw the thieves speeding off in it - Streaky

I agree with Turbobloke,
quads are too, portable a commodity, to leave not bolted down, how about a lump of chain and lock round it!

Electrify the thing, rather illegal but who's to know you did'nt lave a loose electrical cable dangling over it

Nail the little gits if they try it on, thats what I say (obviously assuming they are not the little angels that they appear to not to be)

Your right to be concerned Pagey.

Quad bikes an object of desire by scroats/pikeys.

Take extra precautions and get it locked up somewhere or take wheels off because once they have I. Deed a posiible source they could be back.

Maybe too I am being paranoid as latest spouting on the media is that hoodies are good guys (like hell).

Bloody thieves. We've a diesel tank in our farmyard which is occasionally raided by "travellers". Finally, got fed up with it and put some water in instead.

Wandered that way last week and noticed the lock had been broken, again. Hope some scums car is now trashed ;-)

Until you stab one of them, at which point the entire force will descend on you like a rabid dog...

I'd definitely be hanging around tonight or tomorrow night with a digital camera.

Resolution isn't good enough. A digital camera with a bright flash once they're on top of the quad is much better. They'll see it, but they'll also leg it, and you have something that will warn the police whats going on.

Didn't some one on PH a while ago say that they had a quad bike stolen and to do it they carried it over teh top of his car causing damage to that as well.

not trying to alarm you unduly as I have no idea how much those things weigh but you did say there were 6/7 of them.

do you have a hefty chain you could use as an extra deterant?

As in swinging it around your head? Perhaps use it to keep the rabid pitbull under limited control - Streaky

Dogs are an amazing deterrent...especially big ones!

But personally I like the mains-voltage deterrent. Admittedly you'll probably only catch one of them (unless they really are as stupid as the hoodies make them look!), but it'll be a pretty good deterrent to repeat offences!

Or a nice piece of fishing line surrounding the quad at about 1-2 feet. As soon as its triggered, 120dB klaxxons and bright blue sirens fire, a hatch opens in the garage/garden, and 5 Rottweilers come screaming out like the horses of the apocalypse. Simultaeneously, a large barrel of used chip-oil tips over from the roof, covering the area in grease.

..Which had been kept at a temp just below flash point so as not tooo be too cold when it landed on them..

BTW, my wife drove off the drive the other day to find some arse had nicked the glass from her door mirror...

Still, I suppose the £25 they saved was worth a bit of a telling off from plod if I had caught them. (would have added a bit of colour during their hospital stay )

not that i would think of doing this myself () but if you had the resorces you could rig up 3 crossbows,1 aimed at chest/neck hight covering the area a rider would sit and the other 2 set to hit anything over 4 1/2ft high to the left or right of the bike, tie some fishing wire to the handlebars and the triggers of said weapons, soon as its moved the crossbows sort things out.

you will need 2 eye-hooks to thread the wire through so you can set the trigger to be pulled when the bike moves.

if it were me i'd use barbed bolts......but im a bit of a sadist.

oh,in the interest of health and safety i suppose you'd better put a 'risk of death' notice up,at-least you tried to warn them first that way.

edited to add: the above is mearly a guide to motorcycle security (south african/psychotic/slightly imbalanced mentality style),the law wont take kindly to you killing said scrotes as even cabbages that smell of lynx africa, chips and lightweight homegrown weed (actually its lawn grass but dont tell them, the local dealer makes 10k each time he empties his qualcast) have rights nowadays

Its bl00dy heavy - takes 3 blokes to lift it of the gound and into back of my pick - up.

Luckily wher its parked/wedged its very tight and leaves no room for anyone to stand to lift it.

If I was going to own one permanently I would go for the ground chaining option

I think my instincts were 100% right though - the gang walked back past about 50mins later - I rigged a quick temporary camera (the plug and play type) up to cover the street out of curiosity.

For safety's sake (although tempted by the suggestion to electrocute the little Cnuts) I have added a quick cable loop throgh the axle to the closed circuit on my burglar alarm - so if they try and nick it all hell will let loose and being a very sporty person there are always various items of sports equipment available to hand

That's not necessarily a deterrent. I've known generators to go missing off lighting towers. They cut through the mountings and then apparently lifted the things over their heads to get them over a seven foot fence.

Lights, noise, ground chains and cameras are probably the best if you can't get it indoors.
